Soccer AM’s Tim Lovejoy Initially Sought to Replace Co-Host Helen Chamberlain

The popular Sky Sports show Soccer AM, known for its blend of football and entertainment, was almost drastically different at the outset. Presenting duo Tim Lovejoy and Helen Chamberlain, who hosted the program for 11 years, became synonymous with its chaotic and comedic style. However, Lovejoy has admitted that his initial plan upon joining the show was to “get rid” of Chamberlain from her role.

Soccer AM’s Rise to Prominence

The now-concluded sports chat show, Soccer AM, broadcast from August 1994 until May 2023. Celebrated for its unique mix of pop culture elements and celebrity guest appearances, the program featured a range of hosts over the years, including former Premier League player Jimmy Bullard, alongside Russ Williams and Andy Goldstein.

Many viewers contend that it was the partnership of Tim Lovejoy and Helen Chamberlain that truly transformed the show into a major success. Prior to Lovejoy’s appointment, Helen Chamberlain was already a member of the Soccer AM team.

Lovejoy’s Initial Reservations

Despite Chamberlain’s established position, Lovejoy confessed to being unimpressed with her initial contributions and immediately considered plans to remove her from the presenting lineup. “I was producing The Big Breakfast when I took on the Soccer AM job,” Lovejoy stated in an interview last year.

“My first thought for a change was: get rid of Helen. Her role seemed to be just linking to commercial breaks with traffic updates, which didn’t interest me,” he explained.

A Change of Heart

Notwithstanding his initial misgivings, Lovejoy’s perspective soon shifted. Recognizing Chamberlain’s extensive football knowledge, he conceded, “We’ve got to keep her.”

The presenter further described their on-screen dynamic as akin to a “brother and sister” relationship, revealing they frequently argued off-camera. “She couldn’t stand me and I couldn’t stand her,” Lovejoy admitted.

Behind-the-Scenes Bickering

Lovejoy recounted one instance where a backstage disagreement spilled over into their live four-hour broadcast. During the show, he openly declared to viewers, “We’ve fallen out by the way, so I’ve no idea what this show is going to be like.”

Fortunately, their disputes were typically short-lived, with tensions often dissipating within 30 minutes. Chamberlain corroborated this in the same interview, acknowledging that she was aware of Lovejoy’s initial perception of her as “pointless.”

Embracing the Chaos

“Thankfully, he realized there was also a part of me that was up for a laugh, embracing the silliness and just going along with the nonsense,” Chamberlain added, reflecting on their evolving relationship.

Following their professional separation when Lovejoy departed Soccer AM in 2007, the duo reunited in September last year to host the Soccer A-Z podcast. A particular episode featured Lovejoy and Chamberlain alongside other familiar faces from Soccer AM, including Robbie Knox, Joe Worsley, and Neil Smythe.

Near Miss for Robbie Knox

Former Soccer AM producer Robbie Knox disclosed that Lovejoy had initially offered his role to another individual. “I interviewed, you offered it to someone else. They couldn’t start quickly enough, so I got the position. I’m only here because someone else couldn’t leave their previous job,” Knox revealed.

Chamberlain interjected, highlighting Lovejoy’s initial plans for her, stating, “[Tim] was gonna sack me! Don’t you remember? He took over Soccer AM, first thing on his list: ‘Don’t need her, she doesn’t do anything!'”

“That is true,” Lovejoy admitted. “But it turned out Helen was brilliant!”
