Man Utd transfer news: United can sign Robert Lewandowski as winger before deadline

Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid have all been linked with Lewandowski amid uncertainty over his Bayern Munich future.

The Poland international is reportedly chasing one last, big pay-day having dominated the Bundesliga during his time in Germany.

Manchester United are currently pursuing a centre-back and right winger with just days of the transfer window reaming.

But football finance expert Kieran Maguire thinks the Red Devils may land Lewandowski – and then play him on the flanks.

The Poland star has spent the entirety of his career through the middle, becoming one of the world’s deadliest strikers along the way.

But Maguire thinks United may play him out wide if the 29-year-old signs on the dotted line before Thursday’s 5pm deadline.

He told the Daily Star: “United can certainly buy Lewandowski.

“But the issue is from his point of view that [Romelu] Lukaku is clearly Jose Mourinho’s favourite.

“Therefore he would need Anthony Martial to leave and even then he may be pushed out wide.”

Bayern have, so far, insisted their talisman will not be going anywhere.

They have, though, been in talks with United over a deal for Jerome Boateng, who may leave.

And Niko Kovac recently insisted Lewandowski would stay, saying: “There is nothing new with Robert. The status is that he will not leave the club because he’s our top striker.

“And certainly we don’t want to give him away and won’t give him away.

“It’s true that Robert is thinking about playing somewhere else. Naturally, one thing is what he wants, the other is what we want.

“We are FC Bayern, we have a top striker. We certainly will not let ourselves be persuaded from the outside, that’s the way to do it. Robert has a contract… he will certainly stay here as long as possible.”
