Celebrating the release, a special music video for “post-post-apocalyptic dance party” by mxmtoon has debuted, showcasing a synth-infused track that encapsulates the game’s spirited essence and mxmtoon’s enthusiasm for both music and gaming.

Exploring the LEGO World Through Music

For mxmtoon, this collaboration resonated deeply, evoking a sense of fun and nostalgia. “From the moment I began composing ‘post-post-apocalyptic dance party’, I was at my grandmother’s house in Florida, filled with excitement to craft a song inspired by a character I admire. It felt incredibly organic,” she shared. Her affection for LEGO games, the Horizon series, and music itself, shaped the track’s tone from its initial conception. “My drive to create this song stemmed directly from my childhood love for LEGO games and my passion for music. This project felt like the ideal opportunity to merge these two passions.”

This fusion of inspirations dictated not only the track’s sonic landscape but also its narrative elements, incorporating subtle nods to the Horizon universe’s rich lore and distinctive setting. “The Horizon series offered a wealth of inspiration while writing, providing a detailed and immersive world through Horizon Zero Dawn, a universe I was already familiar with as a devoted fan. Integrating lore elements and specific vocabulary into the song, from references to the Focus to descriptions of the post-post-apocalyptic setting, felt natural and enjoyable. It allowed me to express my genuine enthusiasm for the game and weave in the details I loved discovering during gameplay,” mxmtoon explained.

The entire creative process also sparked a sense of reminiscence for mxmtoon. “It was like being 15 again, creating music purely out of excitement, unsure of the final outcome, but ultimately resulting in a project I’m incredibly proud to be part of.”

A Deeper Dive into the Soundtrack’s Composition

While mxmtoon infuses a pop sensibility, the broader musical landscape of LEGO Horizon Adventures is sculpted by composer Homay Schmitz. Schmitz’s score achieves a harmonious equilibrium between adventurous and whimsical tones. “The primary concept was to maintain a light and upbeat feel, avoiding overt epicness for the most part,” Schmitz stated. “The game possesses an inherent playful charm, and we aimed to mirror this throughout the score. As players journey through the game, they will encounter diverse environments reflected in the music, ranging from folk-inspired rhythms to funky synth-pop and even hints of western desert blues, extending to orchestral metal. However, the consistent thread was to ensure the music remained enjoyable, vibrant, and adventurous – something players could genuinely appreciate.”

The game’s visual aesthetics significantly influenced the sound design. “My initial glimpse of the gameplay highlighted the stunning detail and visual richness,” Schmitz noted. “Particularly the fluidity of LEGO elements’ movement, like the cascading waterfalls. It established a unique visual style characterized by warmth and approachability.”

Working within the LEGO rendition of the Horizon universe necessitated embracing both its established emotional core and its reimagined, lighter tone. Schmitz elaborated, “Certain themes from the original game were intentionally integrated to establish familiarity and bridge the two distinct worlds. For instance, ‘Aloy’s Theme’, composed by Joris De Man, was a logical choice to retain for the central character. Its instant recognizability allowed it to be subtly woven throughout the game. The challenge was to infuse it with ‘LEGO DNA,’ transforming its haunting beauty into something more animated.”

This playful reimagining did not necessitate abandoning the fundamental essence of Horizon. Schmitz skillfully interwove recognizable motifs into the score in inventive and unexpected ways. “One personally exciting detail, albeit subtle, was access to some of the original game’s sound sources. These included tuned and untuned percussion crafted by composers The Flight. Incorporating these into the new score felt particularly special. Having played Horizon and listened extensively to its soundtrack, these sounds were immediately familiar. It felt like a meaningful way to connect the beloved game with its LEGO incarnation – another bridge between these worlds.” Homay also revealed an additional hidden detail for attentive fans: “In ‘The Flood’ from Horizon Forbidden West, a lullaby rendition is played by a baby mobile in one of the cutscenes!”

Schmitz revealed some of her favorite compositions within the soundtrack came from creative experimentation. “If I were to choose a couple, ‘Jewel Tones’ and ‘Melodies on the Mesa’ stand out. One prominently features Boomwhackers, tuned plastic tubes used as percussion instruments, whose material aligns fittingly with the LEGO aesthetic. Having never worked with them before, exploring this sonic palette was particularly enjoyable!”

Whether Aloy is soaring through a LEGO-ized Mother’s Heart or battling a Sawtooth constructed from LEGO bricks, the music injects personality and impact into every moment. “Establishing the appropriate tone for the initial combat cue proved both enjoyable and slightly demanding,” Schmitz recalled. “Striking the precise equilibrium between fun and intensity was crucial – ensuring it was driving enough for combat scenarios without becoming overly menacing or somber. Once this balance was achieved, it served as a reliable benchmark for subsequent combat cues, allowing for engaging battles that never felt excessively intense or unsettling.” Discussing epic battle themes, Schmitz highlighted her collaboration with composer Harry Brokensha: “The orchestral rock-metal fusion for the final boss encounter. The game encompasses a diverse range of genres, all of which were rewarding to work on. However, I especially admire Harry’s work on this track, which is arguably the most dramatic cue, yet retains the necessary playful elements!”

Schmitz reflected fondly on collaborating with the development teams and the community’s positive reception. “From beginning to end, working with such an exceptional team was an absolute pleasure! We maintained close collaboration regarding the music, engaging in regular discussions about the LEGO Horizon world, its underlying themes, and stylistic approaches.” “We are all incredibly thrilled for the Horizon community to experience and enjoy the soundtrack wherever they may be!”
