Fatal Helicopter Crash in Hudson River Kills Six, Investigation Underway
A tragic helicopter crash into the Hudson River in New York City has claimed the lives of all six individuals on board, including a family of five from Spain. The New York Police Department (NYPD) is currently conducting an active investigation into the incident. This article provides the latest details regarding the fatal helicopter crash and the ongoing inquiry.
Helicopter’s Flight Path
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided details regarding the helicopter’s final flight. Operated by New York Helicopters, the aircraft departed from the Downtown Skyport in lower Manhattan at 2:59 PM local time. Flight data from Flightradar24 indicates the helicopter was airborne for approximately 15 minutes.
The helicopter’s route initially took it towards the Statue of Liberty before turning north in the direction of the George Washington Bridge. Subsequently, it circled back, flying south along the New Jersey coastline of the Hudson River. The aircraft then plummeted into the Hudson River near a pier in Hoboken, New Jersey, at 3:15 PM local time. Commissioner Tisch stated that the helicopter was inverted upon impact with the water.
Emergency services including police boats responded swiftly to the crash site to initiate rescue operations. An eyewitness, Bruce Wall, recounted witnessing the helicopter’s descent. “It began to disintegrate mid-air, followed by the tail separating. It then flipped over in mid-air and started plummeting,” he described.
Victims Onboard
Six individuals were aboard the helicopter when it crashed, including an American pilot. Reports indicate that a Spanish family, consisting of two adults and three children, were taking a sightseeing tour of New York City via helicopter. Dive teams were deployed to recover the victims. Despite resuscitation efforts, all six occupants were pronounced dead. Four were declared deceased at the scene, while the remaining two succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital, according to officials. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has withheld the identities of the victims.

Crash Cause Under Investigation
The cause of the helicopter crash is presently under investigation, with initial information remaining limited. NYPD Commissioner Tisch stated the “aircraft lost control” and crashed into the river “very close to the shore of a pier.” The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified the helicopter as a Bell 206. Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are involved in the investigation, with the NTSB taking the lead.
This incident marks the deadliest helicopter crash in New York City since at least 2018, according to reports from the New York Times. In the previous incident, five passengers perished, while the pilot survived after a sightseeing helicopter, operating without doors, crashed and overturned in the East River.
