Knicks’ PJ Tucker relishes extremely rare playing time: ‘Like riding a bike’

DETROIT – Veteran forward PJ Tucker experienced an unexpected return to the New York Knicks’ rotation during Thursday’s game against the Detroit Pistons. Initially unsure of his role, Tucker received a text message Thursday morning informing him he would be part of the game plan. Surprising even himself, Tucker was the first player summoned from the bench in the Knicks’ 115-106 defeat to the Pistons. This marked a significant shift for Tucker, offering him substantial playing time and a chance to contribute to the team’s performance.

Tucker’s Return to Action

Tucker ultimately played 27 minutes, surpassing his previous season high by a considerable margin. He engaged physically and tallied his first regular-season points in exactly one year with a signature corner three-pointer.

“Once I got through my initial fatigue, it felt really positive,” Tucker commented. “I began to loosen up, feel comfortable, communicate, and become more involved in the game. It’s like getting back on a bicycle.”

Clutch Minutes in Close Game

Tucker’s impactful return was further emphasized when he participated in the closing moments of the tight contest during the fourth quarter, sharing the court with the team’s starters. This demonstrated the coaching staff’s trust in his abilities during crucial game situations.

The expected return of Josh Hart and OG Anunoby, both of whom rested for Thursday’s game, for Friday’s matchup against the Cavaliers could potentially impact Tucker’s playing time.

Nevertheless, Tucker embraced the opportunity and felt comfortable with the game’s physicality.

Embracing Physical Play

“Plays like those, the box-outs, the contested balls, that’s the feeling I crave,” Tucker stated. “Securing offensive rebounds, it’s like, ‘Yes, I’m back.’ It felt great.”

Debate Over Thibodeau’s Coaching Methods

Contrary to popular belief, evidence suggests that Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau’s coaching style may not actually lead to increased player wear and tear.

Amidst ongoing debate about Thibodeau’s reputation for potentially overtaxing players with extensive minutes, The Guardian conducted an in-depth analysis of data dating back to 2010, Thibodeau’s inaugural year as a head coach. The study concluded that “there’s no definitive or consistent pattern indicating that players coached by Thibodeau are more susceptible to injuries than any other players in the league.”

The accompanying visual in the report indicated that while three of Thibodeau’s five seasons with the Chicago Bulls coincided with elevated injury rates, his subsequent tenures with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Knicks demonstrated either average or better-than-average player health compared to the broader NBA.

Thibodeau Dismisses Injury Concerns

Thibodeau, who strategically rested two starters during Thursday’s loss to Detroit, dismissed the study’s conclusions, suggesting that prevailing opinions will persist regardless of presented data.

“I don’t concern myself with it because opinions are always present,” Thibodeau said. “Whenever scientific evidence is presented, counter-evidence will also emerge. Then you factor in subjective opinions and expert observations. Numerous elements are at play. My philosophy is to prepare thoroughly for your objectives. Maintaining the right mentality and mindset is paramount. Throughout my career, I’ve been around many players and learned from them and various individuals. I don’t dwell on any of that commentary.”
