Mullins Seeks Scottish Grand National Glory After Aintree Triumph
Leading Irish trainer Willie Mullins has entered six contenders for this year’s prestigious Scottish Grand National at Ayr Racecourse. Fresh from a spectacular run at Aintree and his dominance at the Cheltenham Festival last month, Mullins is in excellent form as he targets further success in this key National Hunt event.
British Trainers’ Championship in Focus
Mullins is heavily focused on retaining his British Trainers’ Championship title. His recent Grand National victories significantly narrowed the gap with rival trainer Dan Skelton. At Aintree, Mullins showcased his stable’s strength by training five of the first seven finishers, including Nick Rockett’s impressive 33/1 victory, alongside multiple Grade One triumphs.
Ayr Aim: Championship Lead
The seasoned trainer, aged 68, hopes to seize the lead in the Championship standings this weekend at Ayr. Following Aintree, Mullins indicated his strategy to deploy leading horses to Britain to accumulate prize money, a plan he has swiftly put into action.
Macdermott Returns to Defend Title
Among his six entries for Saturday’s Scottish Grand National is last year’s victor, Macdermott. Ridden by Danny Mullins, the six-year-old demonstrated staying power to secure victory by a narrow margin at 18/1. Consequently, Macdermott’s handicap weight has been increased to 11st 6lbs as he aims to defend his title.
Chosen Witness: Market Favourite
Chosen Witness is considered Mullins’ strongest contender in betting markets, now priced at 5/1 following declarations. Despite unseating jockey Paul Townend at Navan in February, the gelding is expected to benefit from the extended distance and may be favourably handicapped.

Other Notable Runners
Olympic Man, fresh off a Navan win last month, is also set to compete at Ayr. Captain Cody, who previously participated in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham, completes the entries. Captain Cody unseated Danny Mullins at the 13th fence after an error during the Cheltenham race.
Scottish Champion Hurdle and Further Entries
Spanish Harlem and Klarc Kent are also declared, underscoring Mullins’ clear ambition for victory. However, his Ayr campaign extends beyond the Scottish Grand National.
Mullins has also entered Ethical Diamond, Bunting, Batman Girac, and Karafon for the Scottish Champion Hurdle. Western Diego is slated for the Handicap Chase, and Loughlynn for the Champion Handicap Chase over three miles, highlighting his extensive entries across major races at the meeting as he seeks to dominate another significant racing event.
