However, Dr. Marik clarified that he does not advise against conventional treatments and acknowledged that ‘some of these [lifestyle interventions] can be used in conjunction with standard chemotherapy.’

The Zurich-based researchers enrolled 777 participants aged 70 and older and assigned them to different intervention groups.

Professor Heike Bischoff-Ferrari, a key author of the study, stated, ‘This is the first randomized controlled trial demonstrating that the combination of daily vitamin D3, supplemental marine omega-3s, and a straightforward home exercise program may be effective in preventing invasive cancer.’

‘Our findings, while based on multiple comparisons and requiring further validation, may prove valuable in alleviating the burden of cancer,’ Professor Bischoff-Ferrari added, highlighting the potential public health implications of their research.

Combined Interventions Show Enhanced Cancer Risk Reduction

The study determined that combining omega-3 supplements, vitamin D supplementation, and exercise demonstrated a slightly more pronounced effect on cancer risk reduction. This synergistic effect underscores the benefit of a multi-faceted approach.

Researchers observed that these three interventions, when implemented together, had the most significant impact in diminishing cancer risk. This highlights the potential of comprehensive lifestyle modifications.

Professor Bischoff-Ferrari further noted, ‘One of the most pressing questions within the field of rejuvenation is whether treatments exist that can effectively rejuvenate humans.’

‘Given the well-established health benefits of omega-3s, we investigated their influence on epigenetic clocks, which represent the most reliable molecular markers of biological age.’

‘Even a modest deceleration of biological aging, such as the three to four months observed across three years in our study, is beneficial. If sustained, it may yield relevant improvements in population health.’

‘In the same trial, omega-3s also reduced falls by 11 percent and infections by 13 percent. Combined with vitamin D and exercise, they reduced cancer risk by 61 percent and frailty by 39 percent,’ she concluded, emphasizing the broad health benefits of these interventions.

Mechanisms Behind Cancer Risk Reduction

Scientists theorize that vitamin D, whether obtained from sun exposure or supplements, may help prevent tumor development by regulating various genes involved in cell reproduction and division. This regulation can prevent the uncontrolled proliferation of cancerous cells, a hallmark of cancer development.

Similarly, researchers suggest that high levels of omega-3s, primarily found in fish and nuts, along with regular exercise, can suppress inflammation, inhibit malignant cell reproduction, and counter angiogenesis. These mechanisms collectively contribute to cancer prevention.

Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones, is crucial for tumor growth and metastasis. By inhibiting angiogenesis, tumors are deprived of essential oxygen and nutrients, hindering their progression.
