Djokovic Downplays Injury Concerns Ahead of Monte-Carlo Masters
World-renowned tennis star Novak Djokovic has minimized concerns regarding his physical condition as he prepares for the Monte-Carlo Masters tournament. Despite recent issues with his forearm and lingering eye discomfort experienced in Miami, the Serbian athlete insists these are merely “minor” setbacks. Concerns arose during a practice session where Djokovic received attention from his physiotherapist, prompting speculation about his fitness ahead of the prestigious competition.
Forearm Issue Described as “Minor”
During a Wednesday practice, observers noted Djokovic seeking assistance from his physiotherapist for his forearm. Commenting on the matter, Djokovic brushed aside worries, stating, “It’s all good. It’s all good. Just a minor, minor thing,” indicating a seemingly insignificant issue.
Eye Troubles Persist, But Not an Injury
Addressing his eye, which has troubled him recently, particularly during the Miami Open final, Djokovic clarified, “There’s no injury.” This statement aimed to alleviate fears of a significant setback, although the eye issue has been a recurring concern.
Practice Session Sparks Speculation
Tennis commentator Nick Lester, observing the practice session, remarked on the situation: “Here is Novak Djokovic who is being looked after by his physio.”
Lester further added context, saying, “Of course, he’s had some problems with his eye over the last few weeks, particularly in that final in Miami. Hopefully he’ll be okay, just getting the body looked after. It’s a cool day, that doesn’t help the body either.”

Participation in Monte-Carlo Initially “In Doubt”
Prior to the tournament’s commencement, Djokovic had openly discussed his recent health challenges, including eye problems and a viral infection. He revealed that his participation in the Monte-Carlo Masters was initially uncertain due to these ailments.
“It was [in doubt]. Particularly because of the infection of the eye and a little bit of a viral infection I’ve been dealing with last week, but it seems to be okay these days. I mean, not ideal,” Djokovic explained regarding his condition leading up to the event.
He elaborated on the timeline of his eye issue: “Unfortunately, it started in semi-finals day in Miami and so I did struggle with it in the finals. But it’s calming down, I guess. I mean, I’m visiting the doctor later today, so let’s see, should be okay for the for the first round here.β
Performance Disappointment in Spite of Physical Concerns
Despite a ten-day gap between the Miami final and his first match in Monte-Carlo, Djokovic expressed disappointment with his performance, regardless of any lingering physical unease. Small signs of swelling were still visible under his eye during Wednesday’s match, yet his primary concern was his level of play.
Djokovic stated his expectations were tempered, “I expected myself at least to have put a decent performance. Not like this. It was horrible. I did not have high expectations, really,” conveying his dissatisfaction.
Reflecting on his match, he added, βI knew I’m gonna have a tough opponent and I knew I’m gonna probably play pretty bad. But this bad, I didn’t expect.β
Madrid Open Return on the Horizon
Looking ahead, Djokovic is anticipated to compete at the Madrid Open later in the month. He is scheduled to reunite with coach Andy Murray at this tournament, marking his first appearance in Madrid since 2022, where he reached the semi-finals before losing to Carlos Alcaraz.
