Millions of Drivers Risk Fines for Car Park Rule Breach
Expert analysis indicates millions of motorists are unknowingly contravening a fundamental car park regulation, potentially facing substantial financial penalties. Research from Motorpoint suggests approximately 1.5 million drivers could be at risk of parking across multiple bays by 2025. This trend highlights a significant issue for car park management and driver compliance.
Survey Reveals Motoring Habits and Parking Bay Infringements
A recent survey encompassing 2,000 UK vehicle owners explored common parking behaviours, revealing that one in twenty drivers admit to parking across designated bay lines to safeguard their vehicles from potential harm. The study further identified that motorists aged 25-34 are nearly twice as likely to park outside of a marked parking space compared to other age demographics. However, many drivers may be unaware of the financial repercussions, as penalties for parking over bay markings can commence from £70.
Potential Increase in Parking Charge Notices
It’s important to note that final penalty charges can escalate to approximately £130 in certain regions, contingent on the seriousness of the parking infraction. This variability underscores the importance of drivers being aware of local parking regulations and associated costs.
Expert Advice: Parking Across Bays “Isn’t the Answer”
Tim Rodie, a driving expert at Motorpoint, emphasized that positioning vehicles across two parking bays “isn’t the solution” for motorists concerned about vehicle damage. He advises against this practice due to the associated risks and negative impacts.
Negative Impacts of Selfish Parking Practices
“While I understand the concerns of drivers regarding potential damage to their vehicles in busy car parks, parking across two bays is not the appropriate course of action,” Rodie stated.

“This behaviour not only exposes vehicle owners to the risk of fines, but such inconsiderate parking habits can worsen existing parking difficulties, contributing to increased congestion and slowing down the entire parking process for everyone.”
Recommended Solution: Park in Quieter Areas of Car Parks
“If you are genuinely worried about your vehicle sustaining damage while parked, the optimal strategy is to park towards the rear of the car park. These areas are typically less crowded, reducing the likelihood of other vehicles parking immediately adjacent to yours,” Rodie suggested. This proactive approach minimizes the risk of parking incidents.
Public Annoyance and Zero-Tolerance Approaches to Parking Infringements
Beyond the risk of financial penalties, parking over two spaces is likely to provoke anger and frustration among fellow road users. Inconsiderate parking behaviour is often viewed negatively by other drivers.
Graham Conway, Managing Director of Select Car Leasing, also cautioned that this seemingly benign approach could easily backfire on drivers.
He noted, “An increasing number of private and public car parks are implementing a strict, zero-tolerance policy regarding parking within the designated white lines of parking bays.”
“Even minor parking discrepancies, such as a wheel slightly over the bay line, are being penalized with penalty charge notices (PCNs) of up to £100, depending on the specific location and car park operator.” This stricter enforcement highlights the need for drivers to be meticulous when parking.
