Tragedy struck the baseball world as former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel, renowned for his time as a relief pitcher with teams like the Mets and Yankees, passed away after a devastating nightclub roof collapse in the Dominican Republic. The catastrophic incident at a Santo Domingo nightclub claimed the lives of at least 44 individuals and left 160 others injured on Tuesday.

Dotel was 51 years old.

Initial reports suggested Dotel was rescued alive from the Jet Set nightclub located in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic’s capital. However, according to accounts from MLB reporter Hector Gomez, he succumbed to his injuries en route to a medical facility.

General Juan Manuel Mendez, head of the emergency operations center, officially confirmed the details of Dotel’s passing to Noticias SIN.

MLB Career Highlights

Dotel, a former prospect with the Mets who initiated his MLB career in 1999, showcased his pitching prowess for 13 different franchises over 15 seasons. Notably, he contributed to the St. Louis Cardinals’ 2011 World Series victory.

After being traded from the Mets to the Houston Astros in the Mike Hampton trade following the 1999 season, Dotel spent more than four seasons in Houston. He was subsequently traded to the Oakland Athletics during the 2004 season.

The right-handed pitcher later signed with the Yankees in 2006, achieving a 10.80 ERA in 14 appearances for the team.

His extensive MLB career also encompassed periods with the Royals, Braves, White Sox, Pirates, Dodgers, Rockies, Blue Jays, and Tigers.

Throughout his impactful career, Dotel accumulated a 3.78 ERA, securing 109 saves and an impressive 1,143 strikeouts across 951 innings pitched.
