Christopher Spencer, a researcher at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada, and his team, investigated a beach on Iceland’s western coast. Satellite imagery revealed an unusually light coloration compared to the typical basalt black beaches prevalent in Iceland.
The lighter hue was attributed to an abundance of shells. However, while surveying the area, Spencer noticed granite stones about the size of cobblestones. He immediately recognized that these stones were not native to Iceland. “It’s a little embarrassing how straightforward the discovery was,” he admitted.
Confirming Greenland Origin
Subsequent analysis of the stones verified their origin as diverse locations within Greenland, situated roughly 300 kilometers from Iceland at the closest point. This finding implies that the rocks Spencer discovered were transported by icebergs calving from Greenland glaciers and subsequently deposited on the beach by wave action.

The beach layer containing the Greenland rocks has been previously dated to approximately AD 500 to AD 700, according to Spencer. While icebergs from Greenland occasionally still reach this region, Greenlandic rocks are absent from other beach layers.
