Greek Air Traffic Controller Strike to Halt Flights During Easter Period

Travel plans for thousands of passengers are facing significant disruption as Greek air traffic controllers initiate a 24-hour nationwide strike on Wednesday, coinciding with the busy Easter holiday travel period. The labor action, orchestrated by the public sector union ADEDY, stems from grievances over insufficient staffing and outdated infrastructure, which they claim are hindering their ability to manage current air traffic demands effectively. According to the Greek Air Traffic Controllers’ Association, these long-standing issues are causing considerable delays, a situation anticipated to worsen this year.

Flight Cancellations and Passenger Impact

The industrial action is anticipated to result in the cancellation of approximately 70 to 80 flights originating from the UK, potentially affecting between 11,200 and 12,800 British travelers. Airlines such as easyJet, British Airways, Ryanair, and TUI Airways are expected to be heavily impacted, according to estimations from AirAdvisor. Anton Radchenko, an aviation expert and Founder of AirAdvisor, described Greek airspace as a “ticking time bomb,” particularly for routes serving the Greek islands.

Radchenko emphasized the critical role of air traffic control, stating, “Air traffic control strikes are uniquely disruptive because ATC is the backbone of aviation operations – without it, flights cannot take off, land, or safely navigate airspace.”

Airlines and Airports Affected

The strike is projected to cause substantial cancellations, with over 20 easyJet flights, more than 15 British Airways and Ryanair flights, and in excess of 10 TUI Airways journeys expected to be grounded. Other airlines facing potential disruptions include Aegean Airlines, Air France, and Lufthansa.

Flights departing from major UK airports – including Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Birmingham – and destined for Greek airports in Athens, Heraklion, Thessaloniki, Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Corfu are among those likely to be affected.

Passengers with connecting flights through Greece to destinations in the Middle East, Asia, and Australia are also anticipated to experience travel disturbances.

Broader Impact on European Air Travel

Mr. Radchenko further explained the wider implications of the Greek air traffic control strike, stating, “Greece is a highly popular holiday destination, so with its airspace affected, other ATC centers (in Italy or Turkey) will get flooded with extra traffic.”

He cautioned that “This increased pressure on controllers in nearby countries risks potentially slowing down the entire European flight network,” highlighting the potential for cascading delays across the continent.

Passenger Rights and Compensation

Despite the inconvenience caused by the flight cancellations, passengers are unlikely to be eligible for financial compensation. Strikes are classified as “extraordinary circumstances,” which are considered outside the control of airlines, thus exempting them from standard compensation obligations.

However, under EU regulations, affected passengers are entitled to essential assistance from airlines, including provisions for complimentary meals, accommodation if necessary, and transportation to and from the airport.
