Bitter Cold Grips US as Millions Remain Under Freeze Alerts
Bitterly cold conditions persisted across a large portion of the United States on Wednesday, with approximately 55 million individuals in areas spanning the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast still under warnings for frost and freezing temperatures. These widespread freeze alerts highlight the continued impact of a significant cold weather system affecting a vast area of the country.
Unseasonably Cold Temperatures Expected
Thermometers are expected to register 10 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit below typical levels, resulting in unseasonably cold weather for regions east of the Mississippi River in the coming days. Residents in these areas should prepare for continued chilly conditions.
National Weather Service Issues Cold Weather Advisory
The National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Prediction Center emphasized in a Monday statement that individuals should take precautions against the cold. The NWS highlighted that “cold temperatures, near or below freezing, on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings will be experienced across regions previously affected by recent prolonged storms.”
Regional Temperature Forecasts
Northeast
Specifically for New York, the local National Weather Service office advised that while actual temperatures would reach the low to mid-40s on Tuesday, wind chill would make it feel much colder, like the 20s during the morning and 30s in the afternoon.
Southeast
In Atlanta, a colder air mass was expected to usher in low temperatures Tuesday evening. The National Weather Service for the region indicated that some locations might encounter freezing or near-freezing conditions.

Gradual Temperature Increase Anticipated
A gradual increase in temperatures is anticipated as the week progresses and into the weekend. However, the immediate forecast remains dominated by below-average temperatures across a large portion of the eastern United States.
Continued Flooding Threatens Midwestern and Southern States
Concurrent with the cold weather, flooding remained a significant concern on Tuesday following the destructive storms that impacted the Midwest, mid-South, and Northeast the previous week. Tragically, these storms caused at least 24 fatalities. As of Tuesday, 20 river locations were still classified as being at a major flood stage.
Ohio River Flooding in Louisville
In Louisville, Kentucky, Mayor Craig Greenberg stated in a Monday social media post that the Ohio River had risen to 35 feet in the city’s center and was forecast to peak at 37 feet on Wednesday. He emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “This is officially one of the Top 10 flooding events in Louisville history,” and urged residents to “please use caution when traveling, especially if it is along the Ohio River and be alert of road closures in your area.”
Low-Impact Weather Elsewhere
Apart from the river flooding in certain regions, the remainder of the country was expected to experience generally low-impact weather conditions, including scattered showers, thunderstorms, and light snow in some areas.
Regional Weather Outlook
New England
Specifically, light snowfall was anticipated across New England on Tuesday.
Florida
Florida was forecast to receive thunderstorms and showers.
Northeast and Tennessee Valley
Moving into Wednesday, the Northeast was predicted to experience further showers and storms. The Tennessee Valley was also under alert for potentially severe storms on Wednesday.
