Real ID Enforcement for Domestic Flights to Begin Next Month
A significant airport security enhancement, developed over two decades, is scheduled to be implemented next month. Beginning May 7, travelers in the United States will need to possess a Real ID compliant identification to board domestic flights.
Real ID Act: Enhancing Air Travel Security
Following numerous postponements, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will commence enforcement of the Real ID Act, initially introduced in 2005 in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks to strengthen security protocols for air travel.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has repeatedly extended the deadline from the original 2008 date; however, the May 2025 deadline is currently considered definitive.
“Individuals planning to fly domestically within the U.S. in the coming months should prioritize obtaining a Real ID compliant card by May 7, or alternatively, travel using their passport, even for domestic journeys,” advised Nick Ewen, senior editorial director at The Points Guy, in a statement to CNBC.
Real ID Compliance and Acceptable Identification Forms
According to the DHS, a state-issued ID or driver’s license marked with a star (and/or flag) or labeled “Enhanced” signifies Real ID compliance, allowing holders to board domestic flights and access specific federal facilities.

DMV Experiencing High Demand for Real IDs
State Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMVs) nationwide are reportedly facing significant surges in appointment requests for Real IDs.
“Reports indicate limited appointment availability and increased wait times,” Ewen noted. “For instance, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission’s online appointment system currently shows zero available appointments for individuals not yet eligible for license renewal within the next three months.”
Challenges and Preparation for Real ID Application
Individuals without a Real ID may encounter difficulties obtaining one before the May 7 deadline. However, those fortunate enough to secure an appointment should ensure they arrive at their DMV well-prepared with the necessary documentation.
Document requirements vary by state. The DHS provides an online tool to help travelers determine if they are “Real ID ready,” along with a map detailing state-specific requirements. In most states, the cost of a Real ID is comparable to a standard license, although some states may impose a supplementary charge.
