Is the End Nigh? “The Handmaid’s Tale” Final Season Arrives

As the highly anticipated sixth and last season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” premieres, fans are on tenterhooks to discover the ultimate fate of June Osborne. However, the concluding chapter for June and the dystopian world of Gilead was envisioned nearly a decade ago, according to the show’s creator. In a recent interview with The Post at the Hollywood premiere, executive producer Bruce Miller revealed that the series finale’s concept was formulated years prior and has remained unchanged throughout the show’s development.

Creator Bruce Miller Confirms Long-Standing Vision for Series Finale

Despite finalizing the last episodes on premiere night, Bruce Miller disclosed to The Post that the conclusion of “The Handmaid’s Tale” has been predetermined since its inception.

“We invariably film multiple variations for scenes, including potential alternative endings for the finale episode,” Miller explained when questioned about alternative endings. “However, the ultimate direction was always firmly established.”

Miller further stated, “The very conclusion of the series mirrors the pitch I initially presented to Elisabeth Moss when we first discussed the show. It’s been consistent from our earliest conversations.”

No Scenes Cut from Final Season

The Handmaid’s Tale,” a Hulu original series since 2017, boasts a stellar cast including Elisabeth Moss (June), Yvonne Strahovski (Serena), Bradley Whitford (Commander Joseph Lawrence), Samira Wiley (Moira), and O-T Fagbenle (Luke).

Regarding the series finale, the creator noted that while scenes are often trimmed for pacing, this season remained intact.

“I genuinely cannot recall any scenes being removed this season,” Miller shared. “This year’s narrative arc included significant, complex sequences that were challenging to film. Any elimination of those would be easily remembered.”

Executive Producer Warns Viewers to Prepare for Emotional Finale

Executive producer Warren Littlefield offered a lighthearted warning to viewers about the finale: “Have your tissues ready,” while also adding, “I believe it offers a truly satisfying resolution.”

Moss recounted her initial response to the final scripts as one of utter astonishment, exclaiming “holy s–t.”

Elisabeth Moss Directs Final Episodes

Adding to her involvement, Elisabeth Moss took on directorial duties for the final two episodes (Episodes 9 and 10), an appropriate acknowledgment for the Emmy-winning lead.

Miller described Moss in the director’s role as “the most organic transition imaginable.”

“She embodies professionalism and approaches her work with enthusiasm daily. She’s an exceptional leader,” he remarked. “Her directorial approach is seamlessly aligned with her acting sensibilities.”

Co-Stars Praise Moss’s Directorial Skills

Miller elaborated on Moss’s directing style, comparing it to “witnessing a flawless performance.”

Her fellow cast members echoed this praise.

Wiley, portraying June’s confidante Moira, conveyed a deep “level of confidence” with Moss, stemming from their long-standing collaboration.

“Witnessing my friend, whom I’ve seen mature over the years, assume such a commanding position is truly multifaceted,” she commented.

“The Testaments” Spinoff in Development

The acclaimed drama “The Handmaid’s Tale” delves into June’s struggle within Gilead, a brutal and oppressive society where women are subjugated under a patriarchal regime and mothers are tragically separated from their children.

Since its premiere eight years ago, “The Handmaid’s Tale” has garnered significant recognition, securing 15 Emmy Awards from 76 nominations.

While the celebrated series concludes, Hulu announced “The Testaments,” a forthcoming spinoff based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 sequel novel. Both Moss and Littlefield will serve as executive producers for this new venture.

Spinoff to Focus on Fan-Favorite Characters

The spinoff, “The Testaments,” will center on Ann Dowd’s character, Aunt Lydia, and June’s on-screen daughter, Hannah, played by Jordana Blake.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 6 Air Date

“The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 6 premiered on Hulu on Tuesday, April 8, with the initial release of three episodes.
