Elisabeth Moss Returns as June Osborne in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6
Elisabeth Moss is back in the iconic white bonnet for the highly anticipated final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, premiering on Hulu today, April 8. The streaming service is releasing the first three episodes of season six immediately, with the remaining seven episodes debuting weekly. UK audiences will need to wait a bit longer, as the acclaimed, Emmy-winning series is scheduled to air on Channel 4 and Prime Video at a later, yet-to-be-announced date. This season promises to be a compelling conclusion to June Osborne’s harrowing journey.
Moss’s Career Highlights and Acclaimed Role
While Elisabeth Moss, 42, first gained recognition in Mad Men and further success with Top of the Lake, her powerful portrayal in The Handmaid’s Tale has cemented her status as a leading actress. Her performance as June Osborne, navigating the horrors of a dystopian society in Margaret Atwood’s unsettling narrative, has earned her prestigious accolades, including Best Actress awards at the 2017 Emmy Awards and Golden Globe Awards.
Elisabeth Moss’s Past Marriage to Fred Armisen
In her personal life, Moss was previously married to actor, comedian, and musician Fred Armisen. They met in 2008 during a Saturday Night Live (SNL) episode hosted by Jon Hamm, Moss’s Mad Men co-star. Armisen, then a cast member on SNL, met Moss when she appeared in a sketch parodying her own successful show.
By 2009, the couple were engaged. Moss confirmed the engagement but kept details private, only mentioning to People magazine that the proposal was “perfect.” However, her short-lived marriage to Fred Armisen ended in divorce after only eight months, with the actress citing “irreconcilable differences.”
Reflecting on the separation in a 2014 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Moss described the experience as “extremely traumatic and awful and horrible,” while also acknowledging that “at the same time, it turned out for the best.” She expressed relief that the divorce occurred early in her life, before starting a family.

Armisen himself acknowledged his relationship challenges when discussing his divorce from Moss in a 2013 interview with Howard Stern, admitting, “I think I was a terrible husband. I think I’m a terrible boyfriend.”
He confessed to a pattern of rushing into relationships followed by fear of commitment: “I want it all – fast. I want to be married … the amount of girls I’ve lived with right away … and then somewhere around a year, two years, I get freaked out … I feel bad for everyone I’ve gone out with.”
Elisabeth Moss Welcomes First Child
Following past personal difficulties, Moss has recently experienced joyful news, confirming the birth of her first child in 2024, marking a positive new chapter in her life. While Moss has chosen to keep the identity of her baby’s father private, she has openly shared her happiness about becoming a mother. The celebrated actress expressed feeling “so fortunate” to have her child with her on set.
Describing it as “beautiful synergy,” Moss told The Hollywood Reporter, “This coming together of art and life that was undoubtedly, incredibly meaningful.”
She reflected on her role in the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, stating, “I’m really glad that I got to have this last season playing June with a little bit more of a visceral emotional experience of some of the things that June is talking about or fighting for. I’m really happy that I got to have that experience.”
Moss believes her new experience as a mother added depth to her performance in a series centered on themes of fertility and motherhood.
Broken Back Injury During The Veil Filming
In contrast to her personal joy, Moss faced physical adversity when she disclosed that she fractured her back while filming her new FX series, The Veil. This espionage thriller required her to travel extensively and navigate dangerous situations.
Speaking to Variety, Moss detailed the painful incident that occurred during a rooftop combat scene in the second episode of The Veil. “The first time we shot it I hit a wall the wrong way, let’s just say, and ended up lying on the roof for a couple hours,” she recalled.
Moss recounted, “We actually shot the next day at the airport, those are the Paris airport scenes you see [in the episode], and I actually have, like, a broken back.”
She lightheartedly commented on her injury: “I tried to get them to put a green blanket over me, and just VFX [visual effects] me out. I was like, ‘Look, just put the green blanket over me and you can scrub me out in post.'”
Fortunately, Moss has recovered from her injury and has a busy schedule ahead, with several upcoming projects including She Will Rise, Last Night at the Lobster, and Imperfect Women. There is also anticipation surrounding a potential cameo by Moss in The Testaments, the sequel series to The Handmaid’s Tale, although this remains unconfirmed.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 will be available on Prime Video in the UK starting May 3rd and on Channel 4 in 2025.
