Drawing inspiration from bacterial propulsion, engineers have developed an innovative underwater robot capable of maneuvering delicately in any direction. This novel device, dubbed ZodiAq, utilizes 12 flexible appendages, mimicking flagella, to propel itself through water. Its creators assert that this bio-inspired design enables the robot to conduct underwater examinations safely, mitigating risks to both human divers and marine life, unlike conventional propeller-driven underwater vehicles.

Mimicking Nature’s Propulsion: The ZodiAq Robot

Flagella, the minute, hair-like structures present on numerous bacteria, rotate to generate motion. ZodiAq replicates this principle through its flexible arms. Anup Teejo Mathew from Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, explains the biological basis: ” [Bacteria] possess a biological motor that rotates an elongated appendage. This rotation produces thrust, effectively propelling the bacteria forward.”

The pioneering design of ZodiAq allows for precise and gentle movement in aquatic environments. The robot’s flexible arms provide a significant advantage in scenarios requiring careful navigation and minimal disturbance, making it especially suitable for sensitive underwater inspections.

Traditional underwater robots often employ propellers for propulsion, which can pose risks in delicate ecosystems or around fragile structures. Propellers can generate strong currents and are less maneuverable in tight spaces. In contrast, ZodiAq’s flagella-inspired system offers:
