Hawaii Doctor Enters Not Guilty Plea in Alleged Attempted Murder of Wife

HONOLULU β€” A doctor accused of attempting to murder his wife during a hike in Hawaii entered a plea of not guilty to a second-degree murder charge on Monday. The defendant is seeking bail, citing his lack of prior criminal offenses.

Doctor Pleads Not Guilty, Seeks Bail

Dr. Gerhardt Konig, 46, appeared remotely via closed-circuit television before a judge for a brief, two-minute pretrial hearing.

Trial Date Tentatively Set

A preliminary trial date has been scheduled for June 9. Dr. Konig remains in custody but will petition the court to set bail.

Defense attorney Thomas Otake stated, “As the court is aware, it is common practice in attempted murder and murder cases over the past decade to set some level of bail.”

“We see no justification for this case to deviate from that standard, particularly given Dr. Konig’s absence of a criminal history.”

Details of the Alleged Attack on Hiking Trail

The near-fatal assault reportedly occurred on March 24 while Dr. Konig and his wife, Arielle Konig, were hiking on the Pali Puka Trail in Honolulu, according to authorities.

Court documents supporting the arrest detail that the Maui-based anesthesiologist asked his wife to pose for a photograph. However, she declined because they were too close to the edge and began to walk away.

Subsequently, Konig allegedly pushed Arielle into bushes, retrieved a rock, and struck her head approximately ten times. He is also accused of grabbing her hair and smashing her face into the ground, as stated by authorities.

Police reports indicate that the suspect then “removed two syringes from his bag and attempted to use them on her, but she managed to take them away from him.”

Intervention by Hikers Halts Attack

The assault was interrupted when other hikers heard cries for help and intervened, officials reported. Dr. Konig fled the scene but was apprehended hours later following a brief foot pursuit.

Defense Attorney Issues Statement

β€œDr. Konig’s not guilty plea this morning was not merely a formality but a substantive response to the accusation that he attempted to kill his wife,” Otake asserted in a statement released on behalf of his client.

β€œThere are always multiple perspectives to every situation, and only one side has been presented thus far. The alternative perspective of this situation will be presented within the legal process at the appropriate juncture.”
