Manchester United’s Onana Defends Tactical Approach Amidst Fan Scrutiny

Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has responded to criticism from supporters regarding his deliberate distribution style, asserting that his approach is intended to benefit the team. The shot-stopper has faced fan discontent for occasionally delaying ball release instead of opting for swift passes, but he maintains this tactic is employed to aid his teammates on the pitch at Old Trafford.

Onana’s Rationale Behind Distribution Decisions

Addressing the concerns, Onana explained: “It doesn’t affect me because the decision I make is to help the team. Sometimes I will make the right decision, sometimes I will make the wrong decision. When I feel my players need respite, I have to take my time; when I feel we need to accelerate the game, I will do it.”

Manchester City Match Example

Onana cited the recent goalless draw against Manchester City as an example, highlighting how Pep Guardiola’s side dominated possession. “Sometimes, as in the second half with an opponent that has a lot of control – they have more possession than us – I have to allow my teammates to breathe. They need me to do that,” he elaborated.

Pressure of Playing for Manchester United

Comments from Ruben Amorim, who previously suggested that Manchester United players can feel immense pressure when playing at Old Trafford, were relayed to Onana.

In response, Onana acknowledged: “You always feel a degree of pressure when you wear this jersey – the club is of such magnitude. It’s not our best season. You feel the pressure because you’re representing Manchester United. Sometimes it’s an added incentive to perform in front of our supporters. We are determined to secure victories for them.”

Europa League Quarter-Final Against Lyon

Looking ahead, Manchester United are set to travel to Lyon for the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash on Thursday. The Europa League represents a crucial opportunity for the club to secure silverware and potentially qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Winning Mentality for Europa League Tie

Regarding the upcoming match, Onana stated: “We all recognize the significance of this game; we will approach it with a winning mentality. We must go there and demonstrate our capabilities. If we maintain focus, remain compact and united, and adhere to the game plan, we will win the match. Naturally, it will not be straightforward, but I believe we are superior to them.”
