Nintendo President Downplays Tariff Impact on Nintendo Switch 2 Price

Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser addressed concerns regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 price, asserting that tariffs were not a direct factor in determining the console’s initial cost. Speaking after the recent unveiling event, Bowser clarified that previous tariffs were not incorporated into the original price tag of the highly anticipated gaming system.

Delay in Preorders Amid Tariff Uncertainty

Despite Bowser’s statement, the announcement of tariffs has already had repercussions. Shortly after the product reveal, Nintendo communicated a postponement of Nintendo Switch 2 preorders. Originally scheduled to commence on April 9th, the preorders were delayed to allow the company to evaluate the “potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.” The new preorder launch date remains undetermined, and the possibility of a price adjustment is still unclear. Bowser stated, “The information is recent, and like many businesses currently, we are actively assessing the potential consequences.”

Factors Influencing the Price of Nintendo’s New Console

Addressing the question of the Nintendo Switch 2‘s elevated price point, Bowser detailed several contributing elements. He cited the inclusion of a larger LCD screen, enhanced internal hardware, redesigned Joy-Con controllers prioritizing durability, the integrated GameChat social platform, among other advancements. Bowser emphasized the intention to create a device that is “accessible” and perceived by consumers as a valuable component of their broader entertainment options, with a considerable lifespan. He affirmed that “all of these considerations factored into the ultimate price.”

Positioning within Nintendo’s Product Lineup

The pricing strategy for the Nintendo Switch 2 positions it as a premium offering within Nintendo’s current product range. Nintendo intends to continue marketing all three existing Nintendo Switch models – the standard version, the OLED iteration, and the Switch Lite – for the foreseeable future, even after the new console’s release. When questioned about whether the pricing of existing Switch models, with a maximum price of $349.99, influenced the $449.99 price of the Nintendo Switch 2, Bowser’s response was ambiguous. “You have to consider pricing relative to the Switch given its continued availability,” he acknowledged. “However, the pricing strategy was primarily dictated by the features and overall gaming experience offered by this specific device, rather than in direct comparison to the original Switch.”

Quote from Doug Bowser

“We are actively assessing what the impact may be.”

Price Adjustments Extend to Select Games

The price increases within the Nintendo ecosystem are not limited to the console itself. Certain Nintendo Switch 2 games will also feature a higher price. Notably, Mario Kart World is slated to retail for $79.99 upon its June 5th launch, contrasting with the typical $59.99 price for first-party titles on the original Switch. Bowser explained the game pricing philosophy generally, stating that “each game is regarded as a distinct experience,” allowing for price variations based on individual game characteristics.

Justification for Paid ‘Welcome Tour’ Game

This approach also clarifies why Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour – a game designed to educate players about the Nintendo Switch 2 and showcase its core capabilities – is a standalone paid title rather than a complimentary pack-in, akin to Wii Sports or Astro’s Playroom. Bowser elaborated, “Throughout the development of this game, a significant depth of mini-game experiences has been incorporated. They possess considerable depth and replayability. Consequently, upon evaluating the richness of the gameplay and opportunities, we determined that $9.99 represented a reasonable price point.”
