Guardiola Condemns Manchester United Fans for Abusive Chants Targeting Phil Foden

Manchester City’s head coach, Pep Guardiola, has voiced strong disapproval of the offensive chants directed at playmaker Phil Foden by Manchester United supporters during Sunday’s Premier League fixture. The Spanish manager expressed his discontent at the relentless taunts aimed at the England international throughout the Manchester derby, including disparaging chants about Foden’s mother.

Manager Deems Fan Behaviour ‘Shameful’ and ‘Classless’

In post-match comments, Guardiola directly criticized those involved in the chants, asserting that such individuals should feel deeply “ashamed” of their conduct. He stated, “Lack of class. But it’s not United as a club, it’s the people, you know?”

Guardiola elaborated, “We are so exposed in the public eye in global football – managers, owners, and especially football players. Frankly, I cannot comprehend the mentality of individuals who involve the mother of Phil; it demonstrates a lack of integrity, class, and they ought to be ashamed…”

Offensive Chants Mar Manchester Derby

Foden was subjected to chants containing vulgar personal insults during the goalless stalemate at Old Trafford. The England midfielder endured chants that included deeply offensive language, specifically targeting his family, during the intense Premier League encounter.

Foden’s Subdued Performance at Old Trafford

It proved a disappointing afternoon for Foden at Old Trafford, as the usually influential midfielder struggled to impose himself on the game in what was a lackluster Manchester derby. The City star created only a single scoring opportunity and failed to hit the target with his two attempts on goal.

Consequently, the number 47 was substituted after 58 minutes, replaced by Jeremie Doku in an attempt to inject fresh impetus into City’s attack.

Foden’s Form Under Scrutiny After Stellar Season

Following a standout 2023-24 season, Foden has encountered challenges in replicating that stellar form this campaign. He has tallied seven goals in 25 Premier League appearances, along with two assists, and has recently seen his previously undisputed status in the starting eleven at the Etihad Stadium come under pressure.

Guardiola Praises Team Performance Despite Draw

Despite Manchester City’s inability to secure a victory against Manchester United, Guardiola conveyed satisfaction with the overall performance of Foden and his teammates, acknowledging the absence of Erling Haaland’s goal-scoring prowess and physical presence. He clarified, “We fielded players with an eye for goal, such as Omar [Marmoush] and Phil [Foden], and following effective build-up play involving [Ilkay] Gundogan and Kevin [De Bruyne] in close proximity to them, alongside the two forwards, a cohesive approach was evident, demonstrated through passes from Bernardo [Silva], with [Mateo] Kovacic, and [Ilkay] Gundogan.”

He further added, “For many years, we have consistently prioritized possessing the ball, constructing effective play from the back, and implementing robust high pressing tactics. Our intensity levels were commendable, our long ball distribution was effective, and our central defenders, Josko [Gvardiol] and Ruben [Dias], performed exceptionally. Nico [O’Reilly] also delivered a strong performance until fatigue set in during the latter stages. Therefore, in these aspects, we are genuinely very content.”
