Significant Statue Discovery at Pompeii Necropolis
Archaeologists have made a remarkable find in Pompeii: two life-sized statues, depicting a man and a woman, within a newly discovered tomb. These impressive sculptures were located inside a substantial funerary monument situated in the Porta Sarno necropolis, adjacent to one of Pompeii’s principal city gates. The excavation of this site is a collaborative effort between the Pompeii Archaeological Park and the European University of Valencia.
Possible Priestess of Ceres
Initial interpretations suggest the female figure may represent a prominent local woman, potentially a priestess dedicated to Ceres, the revered Roman goddess of agriculture and abundance.
Iconography and Interpretation
The female statue is depicted with a veil and cloak, holding laurel leaves and a scroll – symbols traditionally associated with religious authority and ritualistic purity. Further supporting this theory, the sculpture features carved jewelry, including rings, bracelets, and a lunula pendant.
Identity of the Male Figure Remains Uncertain
The male statue is sculpted wearing a classic toga, draped over his left shoulder. Despite their placement side-by-side, experts are currently uncertain if the pair represents a married couple. Funerary monuments of this era could feature various familial or even unrelated individuals.

“This might be her spouse, yet it could equally be her offspring. Lacking any inscription, their exact relationship remains unknown,” stated Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park. He further noted, “Such tombs occasionally feature two men, or even groups of three”.
Preserved Tree Root and Exhibition Plans
During the excavation, archaeologists also discovered a remarkably preserved root from a tree that once grew above the tomb, located at the male statue’s feet.
“Its presence just a few centimetres below the surface was quite unexpected,” commented Zuchtriegel.
Currently undergoing restoration, the statues are scheduled to be showcased in a Pompeii exhibition opening on April 16.

This discovery follows another notable recent find in Pompeii: a large fresco depicting Dionysus, the Roman god of wine. By 79 AD, Pompeii was a thriving city with a population estimated at 20,000 inhabitants.
The Catastrophic Eruption of Vesuvius
The catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius unfolded over two days. Initially, a period of pumice rain lasted approximately 18 hours, which allowed a significant portion of the populace to flee. However, in the late night or early morning of the following day, pyroclastic flows – intensely hot, high-velocity clouds of ash and gas – began to descend from the volcano.
