Endangered Galapagos Giant Tortoises Hatch at Philadelphia Zoo

In a momentous occasion for wildlife conservation, the Philadelphia Zoo has announced the successful hatching of four critically endangered Galapagos giant tortoises. These new arrivals mark the first offspring for a centenarian pair, Abrazzo and Mommy, and represent a historic milestone for the zoo.

Historic Hatching: First for Philadelphia Zoo

Zoo officials expressed their delight this week at the birth of the four hatchlings, born to Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises, Abrazzo and Mommy. This event is unprecedented in the zoo’s 150-year history. Mommy, who has resided at the zoo since 1932, is believed to be the oldest first-time mother of her species on record.

Critically Endangered Species

Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises face critical endangerment in their native habitat. Fewer than 50 of these tortoises are currently housed in zoos across the United States, making this breeding event particularly vital for the species’ survival.

Hatchling Development and Care

The first hatchling emerged on February 27th, with the remaining three following shortly after. Zoo animal care specialists are diligently monitoring additional eggs that may still hatch in the coming weeks. The hatchlings currently weigh between 70 and 80 grams and are thriving under expert care.

Behind-the-Scenes Nurturing

The quartet of baby tortoises are presently being cared for in a secure, non-public area within the zoo’s Reptile and Amphibian House. According to zoo staff, they are “eating and growing appropriately,” indicating healthy development in their early stages.

Public Viewing Anticipated

The Philadelphia Zoo is planning to introduce the young tortoises to the public on Wednesday, April 23rd. This date coincides with the 93rd anniversary of Mommy’s arrival at the zoo, adding extra significance to the public debut.

Breeding Program for Species Survival

These hatchlings are a crucial component of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP). This collaborative breeding program aims to bolster the population and genetic diversity of endangered species like the Galapagos tortoise.

Zoo President Celebrates Conservation Milestone

“This is a significant event in the history of Philadelphia Zoo, and we are incredibly excited to share this news with our city, region, and the world,” stated Jo-Elle Mogerman, President and CEO of the Philadelphia Zoo. “Mommy has been a fixture at the zoo since 1932, meaning generations of visitors have had the opportunity to see her.”

Abrazzo, the father, joined the Philadelphia Zoo more recently in 2020, transferring from the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in South Carolina.

Looking to the Future

Ms. Mogerman added, “Philadelphia Zoo is optimistic that these hatchlings will contribute to a flourishing population of Galapagos tortoises on a healthy planet in the decades to come, playing a vital role in the long-term survival of this remarkable species.”
