In a 2022 interview with Vanity Fair, Grimes disclosed that she and Musk had secretly welcomed a daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl, in December 2021 through surrogacy. She elucidated the distinct meanings behind the name components:
- Exa: A nod to exaFLOPS, a supercomputing term signifying the capacity to perform 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second.
- Dark: Representing “the unknown,” which Grimes described as often feared but fundamentally “the absence of photons” and linked to “dark matter,” which she considers “the beautiful mystery of our universe.”
- Sideræl: Pronounced “sigh-deer-ee-el,” this term signifies “the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time.” It also serves as an homage to Galadriel, Grimes’ beloved character from Lord of the Rings, who “chooses to abdicate the ring.”
