Pope Francis Makes Surprise Public Appearance at Vatican Jubilee Mass

In a notable return to public engagements, Pope Francis unexpectedly appeared in St Peter’s Square to preside over a special jubilee mass dedicated to the sick and health workers. This marked his first public appearance at the Vatican since being discharged from hospital two weeks prior, following treatment for pneumonia.

Pontiff Appears in St Peter’s Square

The Pope arrived unannounced and was greeted by applause from the assembled crowd. He waved to the faithful as he was assisted in a wheelchair to the front of the altar in the square.

“Good Sunday to everyone,” Francis stated, speaking into a microphone. He tapped the microphone to ensure it was functioning correctly before continuing, “Thank you very much.”

Signs of Recovery After Hospital Stay

The pontiff’s voice appeared stronger compared to his address to well-wishers outside Gemelli hospital on March 23rd, the day of his release. His recent hospitalisation, lasting five weeks, involved treatment for severe pneumonia. He is currently undergoing a period of recuperation ordered by doctors, including physical, respiratory, and speech therapy, alongside ongoing treatment for a persistent lung ailment.

Message of Infirmity and Solidarity

During both the traditional Sunday blessing and the homily, delivered by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the organiser of the Holy Year, Pope Francis referenced his personal experience with illness. The Holy Year is anticipated to draw a substantial number of pilgrims to Rome.

In the homily read by Fisichella, addressing those who are ill, the Pope shared: “In this period of my life I deeply understand: the experience of infirmity, feeling frail, reliant on others for many necessities, requiring support.”

He continued, “It is challenging, yet it serves as an education where we learn daily to offer and receive love, without demands or rejection, without lamenting or despairing, expressing gratitude to God and our fellow humans for the kindness we receive, and maintaining faith in what is yet to come.”

Call to Support the Vulnerable

Furthermore, he implored the congregation to avoid marginalising the vulnerable from their lives, a practice he noted was unfortunately prevalent in contemporary society. “Let us not exclude suffering from our midst. Instead, let us transform it into an opportunity for collective growth and the fostering of hope,” he added.

Prayers for Healthcare Professionals

In the customary Sunday blessing, the Pope offered prayers for physicians, nurses, and healthcare professionals. He acknowledged that they are “not always supported in their work, often facing inadequate conditions, and at times, are victims of aggression. Their mission is demanding and warrants our support and respect.”
