Pope Francis Makes First Public Appearance After Hospital Stay

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis greeted crowds in St Peter’s Square, marking his first public appearance following his recent discharge from hospital. The pontiff’s appearance comes after a five-week period of medical treatment and recovery. His presence reassured worshippers and onlookers eager to see the religious leader after his illness.

The 88-year-old Pope emerged on stage within the Vatican City, using a wheelchair. A breathing tube was visible, positioned beneath his nose, as he addressed the assembled crowd.

“Hello everyone,” Pope Francis stated, accompanied by a wave to the cheering attendees. “Happy Sunday to you all, thank you very much.”

Return After Hospital Discharge

The Pope’s departure from the Rome hospital occurred on March 23rd. Following his release, he previously appeared at his window to deliver a blessing to the public.

Medical professionals initially indicated that Pope Francis would require a minimum of two months of rest at his residence to recuperate.

Positive Health Update

On Friday, Vatican sources released encouraging news concerning the Pope’s well-being, reporting “good spirits” and ongoing work activities as his health condition improves.

Hospitalization for Respiratory Infection

Pope Francis was admitted to hospital on February 14th for treatment of an infection that developed into double pneumonia. A physician involved in his care revealed that the Pope experienced two critical episodes during his treatment, where his health was severely compromised.

Progress in Recovery

Recent updates from the Vatican indicated that, as of Friday, the Pope had demonstrated slight gains in breathing, mobility, and speech. Furthermore, recent blood tests revealed a minor improvement in the lung infection.

While his reliance on supplemental oxygen has decreased, Pope Francis continues to receive it during the daytime. He uses high-flow oxygen through nasal cannulas at night as required.

Background on Pope’s Health

Throughout his life, Pope Francis has encountered various health challenges. Notably, he underwent a procedure to remove a portion of one lung at the age of 21, which doctors suggest makes him more susceptible to infections.

Pope Francis, originally from Argentina, has served as the head of the Catholic Church for the past 12 years.
