Yuan Yang, representing Earley and Woodley, and Abtisam Mohamed, the MP for Sheffield Central, were reportedly denied entry based on suspicions they intended to “document the activities of security forces and disseminate anti-Israel hatred.” This justification was outlined in a statement from the Israeli immigration ministry, as reported by news outlets.
The MPs had travelled to Ben Gurion Airport from Luton, accompanied by their aides. They stated their visit was part of a parliamentary delegation aiming to assess humanitarian aid projects and engage with communities in the West Bank in collaboration with UK charity partners.
Foreign Secretary Expresses Deep Concern
David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary, issued a statement on Saturday expressing strong disapproval. He stated, “It is unacceptable, counterproductive, and deeply concerning that two British MPs, part of a parliamentary delegation to Israel, have been detained and denied entry by the Israeli authorities.”
He added, “I have conveyed directly to my counterparts within the Israeli government that this treatment of British parliamentarians is inappropriate. We have been in communication with both MPs to offer our support.”
Lammy reiterated the UK government’s focus, stating it “remains securing a return to a cessation of hostilities and negotiations to halt the bloodshed, secure the release of hostages, and resolve the conflict in Gaza.”
MPs Voice “Astoundment” at Deportation
In a joint statement shared on social media platform X, the two affected MPs conveyed their “astoundment” at being denied entry. They emphasized the critical importance of parliamentarians being able to witness firsthand the conditions within Palestine.
Senior MP Warns of Reputational Damage
Dame Emily Thornberry, Chair of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, suggested that Israel would “rue the day” they took such action against British parliamentarians, highlighting the potential for negative repercussions on Israel’s international standing.
MPs Reiterate Right to Speak Truthfully
Yang and Mohamed stated, “We are astounded by the unprecedented action taken by the Israeli authorities to deny British MPs entry on our planned visit to the occupied West Bank. It is essential that parliamentarians can observe firsthand the situation within the occupied Palestinian territory.”
They further added, “We are among numerous MPs who have spoken in parliament in recent months regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict and the necessity of adhering to international humanitarian law. Parliamentarians must be able to speak truthfully in the House of Commons without fear of reprisal.”
Deportation Amidst Renewed Gaza Offensive
The deportation occurred as Israel’s military offensive in Gaza has resumed following a brief truce. Reports indicate a significant number of fatalities in Gaza since last month, according to the strip’s health ministry. This contributes to a high overall death toll since the conflict’s commencement, predominantly among civilians. The military campaign was initiated after the attack on southern Israel by Hamas in October 2023, which resulted in numerous deaths and the taking of hostages, according to Israeli sources.
West Bank Tensions and Casualties
While international attention remains largely focused on Gaza, the Palestinian-Israeli rights organization B’tselem has documented numerous airstrikes and Palestinian casualties in the West Bank since the October attacks. Additionally, recent military operations in West Bank refugee camps have resulted in mass displacement.

Thornberry, describing the deported MPs as “potential leaders,” remarked on their respected standing and warned against Israel alienating them and treating them disrespectfully. She emphasized their influence and the long-term consequences of Israel’s actions.
“In my view, Israel really needs to start cultivating allies rather than alienating individuals in this manner. I believe it is an affront to Britain and an insult to parliament,” Thornberry stated.
She reiterated her warning, “I think that they will regret the day they did this to British parliamentarians. This marks the first instance they have ever denied MPs access to the country.”
MPs Return to UK, Diplomatic Channels Used
Darren Jones, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, confirmed that the MPs are now returning to the United Kingdom. He stated that the Foreign Secretary engaged with his Israeli counterpart overnight to convey that the detention of British Members of Parliament on a parliamentary delegation was “clearly unacceptable.”
