A recent study of 2,000 pet owners has brought to light the concerning consequences of neglecting routine deworming for dogs and cats. Alarmingly, a third of participants reported experiencing negative outcomes stemming from inadequate parasite control in their companion animals. Common indicators included increased restlessness and aggressive behavior in pets, hair loss due to excessive scratching, and the unpleasant discovery of worm segments in pet bedding or vomit.
Public Disgust and Worm Misconceptions
The idea of pet parasites evokes strong feelings of revulsion for many, with 68% of those surveyed expressing distaste towards the concept of worms. Despite this aversion, nearly a quarter acknowledged their pets had previously suffered worm infestations, experiencing them twice on average. Further highlighting the perceived unpleasantness, when presented with a magnified image of a worm, 80% likened the parasites to creatures from horror or science fiction films.
Lack of Worm Awareness and Health Implications
However, this apparent disgust does not translate into proactive parasite prevention. Only 20% of pet owners expressed confidence in their ability to recognize worm infestations in their animals. Compounding this issue, 19% admitted a lack of significant concern regarding the health repercussions of worms, and a notable 37% were unaware of the zoonotic potential of certain worm types, meaning they can also infect humans.
Drontal Launches “Horror” Themed Deworming Campaign
In response to these findings and to raise public awareness regarding pet worm risks, pharmaceutical company Drontal has initiated a creative campaign utilizing fictional movie posters. These posters dramatically depict intestinal worms as “alien invaders” within pets, employing titles such as “The Purrasite Within” and “The Furmidable Infestation.”

The unsettling and dramatic visuals are the work of artist Graham Humphreys, renowned for his poster designs for classic horror films including “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Castle of the Living Dead.” This stylistic choice underscores the campaign’s aim to highlight the seriousness of parasite infestations.
Campaign Taglines and Veterinary Endorsement
Catchy taglines such as “A nightmare in nine lives” and “Your best friend just got unwelcome visitors” further emphasize the potential severity of the issue. Luke Gamble, a veterinarian and founder of the Worldwide Veterinary Service charity, offered his professional insight stating, “No cat or dog owner wants their pet to get worms, and these posters perfectly convey just how revolting parasites are. Not only are worms unpleasant to look at, but they’re also distressing for pets.”
Gamble added, “Thankfully, with effective treatment, these unsettling ‘purrasites’ can be controlled and eliminated before they lead to further complications for pets and their owners.”
Reasons for Missed Deworming Treatments
The research identified that 42% of pet owners confessed to lapses in their pet’s scheduled worming treatments. Key factors contributing to missed treatments include:
- Belief that their pet was asymptomatic
- Difficulties in administering worming tablets
- Underestimation of worm risks
- Lack of awareness regarding the necessity of regular deworming
Recommended Worming Schedules
Confusion also exists regarding optimal deworming frequency. Veterinary experts advise that worming schedules should be tailored to the pet’s individual lifestyle, but general recommendations suggest treatment either monthly or every three months as a preventative measure.

Speaking on behalf of Drontal, Luke Gamble stressed the importance of preventative care: “If you are unaware that your pet has worms – which is often the case due to subtle or absent clinical signs – it’s understandable that parasite prevention might not be a primary concern. However, the consequences of infestation can be genuinely alarming and significant. To safeguard your pets from the potential ‘horror’ of parasitic worms – and prevent them from potentially entering your home environment – adhering to a consistent deworming routine is highly advisable.”
He concluded, “The true ‘horror’ of worms is effectively captured in our imaginations – and visually represented in these campaign posters.”
