Ben Affleck Highlights Netflix Film as “Underrated Masterpiece”

Hollywood luminary Ben Affleck has lauded a movie currently streaming on Netflix as one of cinema’s most significant “underrated masterpieces.” The acclaimed actor, known for starring roles in blockbuster hits such as “Batman v Superman” and “Gone Girl,” recently disclosed his favorite films, offering insights into the titles that have shaped his cinematic tastes.

Anticipation Builds for ‘The Accountant 2’

Affleck is set to reprise his role as Christian Wolff, a prodigious problem-solver, in the highly anticipated sequel, “The Accountant 2.” In the forthcoming action-thriller, Wolff becomes embroiled in a perilous case when an old acquaintance is murdered, leaving behind a cryptic message urging him to “find the accountant.”

As the situation intensifies, Wolff seeks assistance from his estranged and formidable brother, Brax (portrayed by Jon Bernthal).

Unveiling Cinematic Inspirations

Together, the brothers endeavor to expose a dangerous conspiracy, finding themselves targeted by a determined group of assassins intent on safeguarding their secrets. Ahead of “The Accountant 2″‘s release, Affleck participated in the “Guest Selects” YouTube series for Alamo Drafthouse. This platform features prominent Hollywood figures sharing the films that have served as inspiration throughout their careers.

Affleck acknowledged the challenge of definitively naming just five all-time favorite movies, noting that his selections are fluid and frequently change. He indicated that his current preferences are largely influenced by recent viewings and films that have inspired him during the production of “The Accountant 2,” according to reports.

Affleck’s Top Film Picks

‘Conclave’ Earns High Praise

Commencing his recommendations with his latest favorite, Affleck warmly praised the award-winning film “Conclave.” He proclaimed, “I thought that Conclave was a really great movie with wonderful acting and directing and cinematography. I didn’t think that I would find the story of how they elect the next pope to be particularly compelling, but I actually found it tense and gripping and kind of masterfully executed.”

‘Midnight Run’ – An Action Comedy Benchmark

Turning to another suggestion, Affleck characterized “Accountant 2” as “a sort of two-hander action comedy drama movie” and cited “Midnight Run” as his premier choice within that genre.

Reflecting on “Midnight Run,” Affleck stated, “It’s a magnificent movie. It’s brilliant and funny, and no one has ever been better than they were in that movie. Unfortunately, it came out against Die Hard, same weekend. Obviously, things panned out for Die Hard, but Midnight Run remains, in my view, like the perfect example of how you execute a movie like this that’s commercial and funny and entertaining and broad but specific and about people that I really care about. I can’t say enough good things about Midnight Run. You should just see it if you like this genre. If you like movies.”

‘Seven’ Declared an “Underrated Masterpiece”

Affleck then highlighted a film he considers frequently overlooked: “I think Seven is probably one of the great underrated masterpieces. I think people don’t include it sometimes in the lists they make of great movies because it’s a serial killer movie, and people go, it’s like horror. It’s actually I think one of the best constructed movies ever made. The screenplay, the execution, the performances, they all work beautifully in concert with one another. The acting is great. The plot and the tension. The reveal point has stayed with us ever since.”

Streaming Availability of ‘Seven’

For viewers in the UK, “Seven,” or “Se7en,” is readily accessible for streaming, currently available on Netflix.

Further Recommendations: Pitt and More

Affleck also commended another Brad Pitt film, asserting, “Tree of Life is one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. Terrence Malick is an incredible director.”

Additional recommendations included “The Usual Suspects,” “Jaws,” “Chinatown,” and “There Will Be Blood.” Upon being informed by producers that he had already listed seven films, Affleck responded with a smile, “OK, I could keep going.”

Ben Affleck’s Complete List of Favorite Films:

  • Conclave
  • Midnight Run
  • Seven
  • The Usual Suspects
  • The Tree of Life
  • Jaws
  • Chinatown
  • There Will Be Blood
