New Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Energize Mexico Beach, Florida

MEXICO BEACH, Fla. – Electric vehicle (EV) drivers in Bay County can now conveniently replenish their vehicle batteries at newly installed public charging stations in Mexico Beach. The recent deployment of these charging points represents a significant advancement in bolstering electric vehicle infrastructure within the region.

Public Charging Available at Welcome Center

City authorities announced the completion of two state-of-the-art charging stations in March. These facilities are situated at the Mexico Beach Welcome Center, providing easy access for residents and visitors alike.

Project Backed by Duke Energy Grant

The electric vehicle charging initiative commenced in March 2024, primarily funded through a grant secured by Mexico Beach from Duke Energy. This financial support was instrumental in bringing the project to fruition.

Unforeseen Delays Due to Hurricane Season

While the charging stations were initially slated for an earlier launch, the project timeline was slightly adjusted due to the demanding 2024 hurricane season. Duke Energy crews were heavily engaged in essential power restoration work across the Big Bend region, impacting the original schedule.

Community Benefits and Growing Demand

β€œVarious external factors slightly prolonged the activation process, which were outside of immediate control. However, we are delighted to see electric cars and trucks already utilizing the stations,” commented Kimberly Shoaf, President of the Mexico Beach Community Development Council. “This uptake clearly demonstrates the value and increasing necessity of such infrastructure within our community, a need we anticipate will continue to expand.”

Duke Energy Expands Charging Network

Presently, Duke Energy manages approximately two dozen charging stations across its service territory. This network includes a station in Apalachicola, further enhancing charging accessibility in the region.

Cost-Effective Charging Rates

Users can expect an average charging rate of around 43 cents per kilowatt-hour. This pricing structure approximates the expense associated with refueling a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle, offering an economically comparable alternative for EV owners.
