Woman Dies After Undergoing Cosmetic Surgery in Miami

A mother of one tragically passed away after traveling to Miami for a plastic surgery procedure. Ahmonique Miller, 28, journeyed from Nevada to the city on March 5th with her sister, who also underwent a cosmetic operation.

Surgical Procedure and Post-Operative Care

Reports indicate that the surgeries were initially successful, and both sisters were discharged to a recovery facility for post-operative monitoring for any potential complications. However, tragedy struck the following day when Ms. Miller’s sister, Kiera Barnes, awoke to discover her unresponsive and deceased in the same position they had fallen asleep.

Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) Speculation

Social media posts suggest Ms. Miller underwent a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), a popular cosmetic procedure involving the transfer of fat from areas like the abdomen and thighs to the buttocks to enhance its size and shape. This specific surgery carries a known risk of fat embolism, a dangerous condition where liberated fat cells enter the bloodstream and can travel to vital organs such as the lungs and heart, potentially causing a fatal blockage and death.

Alleged Medication Reaction

Ms. Barnes suspects her sister’s death resulted from a negative reaction to medication administered at the recovery residence. Both sisters received their surgical procedures at Avana Plastic Surgery in Miami.

Popularity of BBL Procedures

BBLs remain a sought-after cosmetic enhancement in the United States, with over 29,300 procedures performed in the past year alone, representing a three percent increase from the previous year.

Ahmonique Miller, 28, passed away after traveling from Nevada to Miami for a cosmetic procedure. She was a new mother to a one-year-old child.

Change of Surgeon and Recovery Home Stay

According to online statements from Ms. Barnes, both sisters were initially scheduled to be operated on by the same surgeon. However, Ms. Miller reportedly switched to a different surgeon prior to the procedures. The sisters underwent cosmetic surgery on March 6th and were subsequently discharged to Keyla’s Recovery House, also located in Miami.

Unprescribed Medication Allegations

It is alleged that on March 7th, personnel at the recovery center provided Ms. Miller with medication that had not been prescribed for her. She was discovered deceased several hours later. The exact nature of the medication is currently unclear, but post-surgical patients typically receive strong pain relief medication.

Toxicology Report Pending

The family is currently awaiting the results of a toxicology examination to help ascertain the precise cause of Ms. Miller’s untimely death.

Family’s Legal Pursuit of Answers

The family’s attorney, Frantz ‘Jahra’ McLawrence, stated that it is alleged that staff at the recovery home provided their client with un-prescribed pain medication that tragically resulted in her death. He also noted that while the police claim to be investigating, communication with the Miami Police Department has been minimal.

Ms. Miller died in the recovery home used after surgery to monitor patients for any complications.

Mr. McLawrence emphasized that post-operative recovery should not be a fatal event. He conveyed the family’s grief, stating that Ahmonique Miller should still be alive with her young daughter and continuing her entrepreneurial endeavors, instead of having died due to allegedly being given un-prescribed medication at the recovery facility.

Social Media Posts and Business Ventures

Prior to her passing, social media posts showed Ms. Miller and her sister arriving in Miami, with a video captioned ‘BBL round 2’. Ms. Miller was also an entrepreneur, operating two small businesses in Las Vegas with employees and pursuing aspirations as a music artist.

Family Mourns and Seeks Answers

Her mother, Wakeelah Miller, expressed her profound grief on Facebook, describing Ahmonique as her firstborn and ‘whole life,’ requesting time to ‘process this loss and begin to heal’. A vigil and balloon release were held in Ahmonique’s honor.

Statements from Surgery Center and Recovery Home

A spokesperson for Avana Plastic Surgery declined to comment, citing the need to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time. Similarly, the recovery house’s attorney, Bob Pardo, stated that it would be improper to comment and offered condolences to the deceased’s family when contacted by the Miami Herald.
