UNICEF Reports Devastating Toll on Children in Gaza Amidst Renewed Conflict
Gaza Children continue to bear the brunt of escalating violence, with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reporting that at least 322 children have been killed in Gaza since Israel initiated a new military operation two weeks prior. The UN agency also stated that at least 609 additional children have been reportedly wounded during the same period, highlighting the severe impact of the Israel Gaza conflict on the youngest and most vulnerable population.
Dire Situation for Gaza’s Young Population
“The ceasefire in Gaza offered an urgently needed respite and a glimmer of hope for recovery for Gaza’s children,” stated UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “However, children have once again been thrust into a cycle of lethal violence and deprivation.”
Escalation of Hostilities
Israel commenced its renewed Gaza operation on March 18th, attributing the action to Hamas’s rejection of a recent US proposal aimed at extending the ceasefire and securing the release of the remaining 59 hostages held in Gaza.
Conversely, Hamas accused Israel of breaching the prior agreement established in January.
Civilian Casualties and Indiscriminate Bombardment
UNICEF reported that “unremitting and indiscriminate bombardments” had resumed throughout Gaza, resulting in a staggering toll of 100 children killed or injured daily during the ten days leading up to March 31st.

Data Reliability and Access Restrictions
UNICEF utilizes figures provided by Gaza’s Hamas-controlled health ministry. While Israel has consistently contested these figures, the UN and other international bodies generally regard them as credible.
Independent verification from international journalists, including the BBC, remains challenging as Israel restricts access to Gaza, preventing on-the-ground confirmation of casualty figures from either side.
IDF Statement on Civilian Harm Mitigation
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) informed the BBC of its “commitment to reducing civilian harm during operational activity” and to “respecting all applicable international legal obligations, including the law of armed conflict.”
The IDF further stated that it “undertakes significant efforts to assess and consider potential civilian collateral damage in its operations.”
Long-Term Impact of the Conflict
UNICEF has indicated that, since the onset of the war over 18 months ago, alarming reports suggest that 15,000 children have been killed, over 34,000 injured, and nearly one million children repeatedly displaced throughout the ongoing crisis.
Worsening Humanitarian Crisis and Aid Blockage
The humanitarian situation across Gaza has deteriorated sharply in recent weeks, exacerbated by Israel’s restriction on aid entering the Gaza Strip since March 2nd – marking the longest such obstruction since the conflict began.
“Without these essential supplies, malnutrition, illnesses, and other preventable conditions are likely to escalate, leading to a rise in avoidable child deaths,” UNICEF cautioned in a press release.
UN Operations Reduced Amidst Medics’ Deaths
The UN announced a reduction in its Gaza operations on March 24th, a day after Israeli forces killed eight Palestinian medics, six Civil Defence first responders, and a UN staff member in southern Gaza.
Context of the Conflict
The IDF launched a campaign with the stated aim of dismantling Hamas, an organization designated as a terrorist group by Israel, the UK, the US, and other nations. This operation was initiated in response to an unprecedented cross-border attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities in Israel and the abduction of 251 hostages.
According to the Hamas-run health ministry, the ensuing war has resulted in the deaths of over 50,399 individuals in Gaza.
