Truck Incident in Downtown Boston Injures Several Pedestrians
A motor vehicle incident in downtown Boston has resulted in injuries to multiple pedestrians, with two individuals, including the truck driver, reported to be in critical condition. The incident, described as a crash, occurred at approximately 12:45 PM in the city’s Chinatown area, at the intersection of Harrison and Kneeland Streets.
Emergency Response and Casualties
According to Boston Emergency Medical Services (EMS), four individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment of injuries sustained in the truck crash. Among the injured, two are currently listed in critical condition, as reported by WCVB, a local ABC affiliate. Additionally, two more individuals received medical attention at the scene of the incident but declined hospitalization.
Scene Description and Vehicle Damage
An aerial view of the scene, provided by WCVB, depicted a yellow Penske rental truck lying on its side on a sidewalk, with firefighters present nearby. Penske is a national company specializing in truck rentals and moving services.
Further images from the location show the overturned truck adjacent to businesses including Great Wall Kitchen Supplies and Jiro’s Sushi. Debris from the collision was scattered across the roadway.
The truck sustained considerable damage from the impact, with its front end significantly crushed. Boston Police Department officials stated that the vehicle collided with a building prior to overturning.
The Boston Fire Department added that the truck also impacted several utility poles before becoming lodged between a pole and a building.
Driver Extrication and Official Statements
“Firefighters utilized specialized extrication equipment to free the driver who was trapped within the truck cab,” the Fire Department stated.
“It was a serious accident, and we are hoping for the recovery of those critically injured,” commented Boston Deputy Fire Chief Steven Shaffer to WHDH, an independent news outlet.
Alen Beljin, senior public relations manager for Penske Transportation Solutions, confirmed that the involved vehicle was “rented to a commercial trucking firm.”
In a statement, Penske Transportation Solutions acknowledged awareness of the Boston incident and indicated they are actively monitoring the situation. “Penske will fully cooperate with investigating authorities. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this unfortunate event,” the statement read. “Based on our records, the truck involved was under rental to a commercial trucking business. Currently, we have no further details.”
Ongoing Investigation and Road Closure
Numerous emergency response vehicles, including ambulances, fire engines, and police cruisers, were present at the scene, which was secured with police cordon tape.
Law enforcement officials have not yet released the identity of the truck driver.
The Boston Police Department issued a public advisory announcing the closure of Kneeland Street between Washington Street and Tyler Street due to the crash and resulting injuries.
“Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes,” the department announced.
