Kate Garraway Reflects on “Immense Faith” from Late Husband Derek Draper

Television personality Kate Garraway has previously disclosed becoming “emotional” regarding the “profound faith” her husband, Derek Draper, placed in her prior to his passing. The Good Morning Britain presenter, 57, experienced immense grief following her husband’s severe Covid-19 diagnosis in March 2020. Mr. Draper, a former political advisor, spent 13 months in hospital before returning home, after which Ms. Garraway became his primary caregiver. Derek Draper sadly died at the age of 56 in January 2024 after an extended struggle with the long-term effects of the illness.

Garraway on the Evolution of Love and Trust

In an interview two years prior to his death with Mail on Sunday’s You Magazine, Kate Garraway discussed the evolving nature of their relationship. “I am not sure that our love for each other diminished, but I believe a new chapter is unfolding, a different way of expressing love,” she conveyed to the publication. “He places immense faith in me. He simply says, ‘Whatever you decide,’ which is truly remarkable, yet it often brings me to tears. I question, ‘God, I hope I am deserving of such trust.'” She further commented, “But I am there to support him. That itself defines a relationship, doesn’t it?”

Jeremy Kyle’s Candid Interview on Life Stories

The news presenter further revealed finding a “positive aspect” amidst their challenging situation, which was the “unquestionable certainty in their bond.” Kate Garraway returns to television screens this evening with a new season of Life Stories, commencing with an episode featuring Jeremy Kyle. The 59-year-old personality was the host of The Jeremy Kyle Show, which premiered in 2005, spanning 17 series before its abrupt cancellation in May 2019.

The Cancellation of The Jeremy Kyle Show

The show’s termination followed the death of Steve Dymond, a 63-year-old construction worker who was a guest on the program. Mr. Dymond tragically took his own life shortly after filming. While Mr. Kyle was exonerated from allegations that his “actions or omissions” “may have caused or contributed to” the unfortunate event, he admitted to Kate Garraway that he recognized the necessity for the show’s ending.

“I fully understand that the Kyle Show had to take responsibility,” he states in the season premiere. “We began in 2005, preceding the rise of social media – and I believe that profoundly altered everything. Presently, one must be extremely cautious in their pronouncements. Understandably, shows of that format are no longer viable.”

Jeremy Kyle added, “There is a pertinent phrase, ‘Do you prefer honesty or falsehood?’ At that time, people yearned for authenticity. We now inhabit a world where sincerity is less common, isn’t it? Individuals are overly concerned with potential reactions.”

Jeremy Kyle Recounts Testicular Cancer Diagnosis

The conversation shifts to a deeply personal territory as Jeremy Kyle discusses his testicular cancer diagnosis in 2012. The broadcaster was informed of a lump after a referral to a specialist at the Princess Margaret Hospital, a private medical facility in Windsor.

Jeremy Kyle recounted, “I said, ‘It has been a pleasure,’ and he responded, ‘No, you have cancer – there is a lump.’ Subsequently, within 20 minutes, I was undergoing scans. Lying there, one contemplates the gravity of the situation.”

Within a day, he underwent surgery to remove a testicle. “I recall walking down a corridor when a large man opened a door,” he revealed to the ITV host. “I collapsed into his embrace and began to weep. I remember thinking, ‘This is the end.'”

“I remember waking up to a wonderful nurse who stayed with me throughout the night, holding my hand. I was petrified. I feared that if she left and the lights went out, that would signify the end. I genuinely believed I was dying.”

Kate Garraway’s Life Stories broadcasts at 9pm on ITV1.
