EasyJet Flight Diverted After Passenger Suffers Fatal Cardiac Arrest
A passenger aboard an EasyJet flight en route from Tenerife, Spain, to Liverpool John Lennon Airport in England tragically died following a suspected cardiac arrest. Fellow travelers and crew members valiantly attempted resuscitation for nearly an hour during the flight on March 25, according to reports, but their efforts were unfortunately unsuccessful.
Emergency Response Onboard Flight to Liverpool
Shortly after departing from Tenerife, the 67-year-old woman collapsed, prompting immediate action from three passengers. Among those who responded were a registered nurse and other medically trained individuals. These Good Samaritans commenced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an effort to revive the unconscious traveler, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.
Heroic CPR Efforts
For approximately 50 minutes, the three passengers alternated performing CPR on the woman. In response to the medical emergency, the flight crew diverted the aircraft to Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport in northern Spain, where paramedics were awaiting their arrival. Sadly, despite the prolonged resuscitation attempts both by passengers and subsequently by medical professionals on the ground, the woman, who was traveling with her husband, passed away before the plane landed.
One of the passengers involved in the on-flight emergency response, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed his condolences to the deceased’s husband. “I spoke to her husband afterwards and just said I’m so sorry,” he recounted to the news outlet. “We tried everything to keep her alive.”
Passengers and Crew Unite in Emergency
This passenger, traveling with family, described immediately volunteering his assistance when the flight deck requested help. He noted that EasyJet staff promptly provided oxygen and a defibrillator. Together with the nurse and a physiotherapist who was also on board, they formed an impromptu medical team to provide aid to the stricken passenger.
“We tried our best, but she died onboard the plane,” he stated. He further detailed the arrival of emergency services upon landing: “When we landed, police, paramedics and the CID team came onto the plane before we all got off.”
Witness Praises Passengers’ Actions
Another passenger who witnessed the distressing situation lauded the efforts of those who tried to save the woman’s life, describing their actions as “exemplary,” according to reports. The passengers on the disrupted flight were provided with overnight hotel accommodations before continuing their journey to Liverpool the following day, as reported by Express news.
EasyJet Statement on Passenger Death
EasyJet, the UK-based airline, confirmed the unfortunate event to local media and communicated that they are providing support to the bereaved family. In a public statement, EasyJet affirmed, “The well-being of our passengers and crew is always easyJet’s highest priority.”
The airline further elaborated on their crew’s response, stating: “Our crew are trained to respond to medical issues and did everything possible during the flight, along with a medical professional who was assisting on board. We have remained in contact with the family and are continuing to offer our support and assistance.”
