US Reacts to Allegations of Paramedic Killings and Mass Grave in Gaza

Washington has stated it anticipates all factions operating in Gaza to respect international humanitarian law, but stopped short of confirming an independent evaluation into the Israeli military’s alleged killing of 15 individuals, including paramedics, civil defense personnel, and a UN official. The discovery of a mass grave has intensified scrutiny of the ongoing conflict.

State Department Response

When questioned about the reported fatalities, State Department representative Tammy Bruce commented, “Every single incident in Gaza is a consequence of Hamas’s actions.”

UN Agency Details Incident

According to the UN humanitarian agency, five ambulances, a fire truck, and a UN vehicle were reportedly struck successively on March 23. Subsequently, 15 bodies, identified to include paramedics still in their uniforms, were discovered gathered and interred in a mass grave.

Israeli Military’s Version of Events

The Israeli military has indicated that its forces fired upon vehicles it described as “advancing suspiciously” without headlights or emergency signals. They claimed a Hamas operative and other militants were among those killed. However, the military offered no direct response to the reports of bodies being collected and buried in a mass grave in the sand.

International Humanitarian Law Concerns

International humanitarian law strictly forbids the targeting of civilians and mandates specific safeguards for medical personnel in conflict zones. These protections are paramount during military operations.

US Legal Obligations

The United States, as Israel’s primary provider of weaponry, is also legally obligated under its own statutes that prevent its arms from being utilized by foreign militaries in violation of humanitarian law. This adds another layer of complexity to the situation.

UN Official’s Reaction

Jonathan Whittall, the head of the UN humanitarian agency in Gaza, described the mass grave as having been “marked” by an emergency light originating from one of the ambulances impacted in the strike.

In a video posted on X, Whittall stated, “It’s an absolute atrocity what has transpired here,” emphasizing that “healthcare workers should never be targeted.”

Escalation of Conflict in Gaza

Israel recommenced its aerial and ground offensive in Gaza on March 18 after negotiations for a ceasefire agreement with Hamas reached an impasse.

Reports from the Hamas-controlled health ministry in the territory indicate that over 1,000 individuals have been killed in Gaza since the resumption of hostilities.

The Israeli military initiated its operation aimed at dismantling Hamas following an unprecedented cross-border assault on October 7, 2023, in which approximately 1,200 people were killed within Israel and 251 were taken as hostages.

The health ministry reports that the ensuing conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than 50,350 people in Gaza.
