The groundbreaking Fram2 mission, a private astronaut flight utilizing a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon capsule, has reached a pivotal stage as the launch hardware arrives at the launch pad. This mission is poised to make history by venturing into a polar orbit, a trajectory never before undertaken by human spaceflight.

SpaceX’s Fram2 Mission Hardware Ready for Launch

SpaceX, on Saturday, March 29th, released images via X showcasing the Fram2 mission’s Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon at Launch Complex 39A, located at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

This significant step confirms that Fram2 remains on schedule for its launch on Monday evening, March 31st. The scheduled liftoff time is 9:46 p.m. EDT (0146 GMT on April 1). The launch window extends for 4.5 hours, featuring three additional instantaneous launch opportunities.

Historic Polar Orbit Mission

The Fram2 mission is set to transport four private astronauts to low Earth orbit. Notably, its flight path will traverse over both of Earth’s poles, marking an unprecedented achievement in human space exploration.

Diverse International Crew

The four individuals selected for this unique space journey represent a diverse array of nations:

  • Chun Wang (Malta): Mission Commander
  • Jannicke Mikkelsen (Norway): Vehicle Commander
  • Rabea Rogge (Germany): Pilot
  • Eric Phillips (Australia): Medical Officer and Mission Specialist

These private astronauts will collaborate on a series of scientific endeavors during their time in orbit.

Scientific Objectives of Fram2

During its three-to-five-day circumterrestrial journey, the Fram2 crew is slated to perform 22 distinct scientific experiments.

Groundbreaking Research in Orbit

The mission includes pioneering experiments such as cultivating mushrooms in space – a potential food source for long-duration space voyages – and conducting the first-ever X-ray imaging of the human body in the space environment.

Spacecraft and Rocket Heritage

According to SpaceX mission details, this Fram2 mission marks the sixth flight for this particular Falcon 9 first stage booster.

Crew Dragon “Resilience” Re-Flight

The Crew Dragon spacecraft designated “Resilience” will be undertaking its fourth mission with Fram2. Previously, this capsule supported Crew-1, SpaceX’s inaugural operational flight to the International Space Station for NASA, as well as the Inspiration4 and Polaris Dawn missions.

Inspiration4 and Polaris Dawn Missions

It’s worth noting that Inspiration4 and Polaris Dawn were independent orbital missions, both financed and commanded by entrepreneur Jared Isaacman.
