Wichita Falls Commemorates Vietnam War Veterans at Memorial Plaza
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Nearly a half-century has passed since the conclusion of the Vietnam War. To recognize the service of those who fought, local veterans organizations hosted a commemoration event at the Lake Wichita Veterans Memorial Plaza. The gathering served to remember and honor the sacrifices of all who served in the Vietnam War.
Belated Welcome Home for Vietnam Veterans
Fifty years removed from the conflict, numerous Vietnam War veterans have yet to experience a proper homecoming. On the 50th anniversary of National Vietnam War Veterans Day, Martie James, representing the Daughters of the American Revolution, expressed her desire to rectify this oversight and offer a belated welcome.
Impact on Veterans and Families
“The impact extends beyond the veterans themselves, encompassing their families as well,” James stated. “It brings solace to families to know their loved ones are remembered and that their contributions to our nation are acknowledged.”
Transition to Civilian Life
Decades after the war’s end, and as Vietnam veterans have rebuilt their lives, James emphasized that a welcoming reception upon their return would have significantly aided their readjustment to civilian life.
“The transition from a state of constant vigilance and concern for personal and comrades’ safety to the security of civilian life is undeniably challenging,” James remarked.
Recalling the Homecoming Experience
Mike Berry, like many of his fellow veterans, vividly remembers the reception, or lack thereof, upon his arrival home.
“None,” Berry recalled. “I disembarked the plane in Seattle, walked through the airport lobby, and simply proceeded home.”
Preserving History and Remembrance
Despite the passage of time and numerous ceremonies and memorials erected over the years, Berry believes any resentment regarding his initial homecoming has dissipated. His current focus is on the paramount importance of preserving the historical significance of the Vietnam War, particularly as many contemporary Americans primarily learn about it through textbooks.
Diminishing Veteran Population
“The numbers of World War II veterans are dwindling rapidly, Korean War veterans are becoming fewer, and Vietnam veterans are also becoming less numerous,” Berry noted. “If commemorations such as this do not take place, this history risks fading away.”
