Enthusiastic crowds of New Yorkers flocked to Coney Island’s Luna Park on Saturday for its highly anticipated reopening. Amusement park aficionados arrived in droves, with some eager visitors present even before the park staff.
Dedicated Fans Arrive Early for Cyclone’s First Ride
David Zubin, 34, from Bensonhurst, demonstrated his dedication by arriving outside the park at an astonishing 3:45 a.m. His goal was to secure a prime spot in line for the inaugural ride of the season on the park’s celebrated wooden roller coaster, the Cyclone.
By 6:30 a.m., Zubin was joined by Erik Knapp, 59, a Brooklyn resident and self-proclaimed “Mr. Cyclone,” further highlighting the anticipation surrounding the beloved ride.
“Mr. Cyclone” and Fellow Enthusiasts Celebrate Park’s Return
Knapp, who has ridden the Cyclone over 2,000 times, shared an uplifting message, “Don’t lose your inner child.” He also revealed a personal touch to his visit, explaining, “Usually, I arrive much earlier, but my mother is unwell. She’s 83, and today’s ride is actually dedicated to her.”
For the past 22 years, Knapp had consistently been the first in line for the iconic coaster. However, this year, that distinction belonged to Zubin.
Zubin expressed his passion, stating, “All I can say is, if you are passionate about something in life, pursue it.”
Following closely behind the two friends were Sarah, 21, and her mother, Marcela Infante, 46.
Hailing from Queens, the mother-daughter duo woke up at 5 a.m. with the hope of being first-timers on the Cyclone.
“[Zubin] was already here, and we started chatting, and now we’ve made new friends,” shared Sarah Infante, emphasizing the friendly atmosphere of the Coney Island crowd.
“The weather is fantastic, and we are incredibly excited for the ride. We are avid rollercoaster enthusiasts, and this will be our inaugural experience on the Cyclone,” Marcela Infante added, highlighting the perfect conditions for Luna Park’s opening day.
Elected Official Highlights Coney Island’s Positive Impact
State Representative Alec Brook-Krasny was present for the opening day festivities, underscoring the importance of Coney Island to the city.
“I always say, ‘If you are in a good mood, come to Coney Island,'” Brook-Krasny remarked. “‘If you are in a bad mood, come to Coney Island – your mood will definitely improve.'”
Luna Park Debuts New Features for 2024 Season
Luna Park welcomed parkgoers with a range of enhancements, including new arcade games, a renovated retail store, and an updated patio at the Salt & Sizzle eatery, adding to the visitor experience for the new season.
Coney Island Celebrates Historic Opening Day
Dick D. Zigun, Coney Island’s self-proclaimed mayor, lauded the exceptional weather for the opening weekend.
“I believe this is the most splendid opening day in the extensive history of Coney Island, spanning over 160 years,” Zigun commented, underscoring the historical significance of the event.
Alessandro Zamperla, along with his mother, Paula Zamperla, and brother, Antonio Zamperla, were also present. The Italian family has been the proud owner and operator of Luna Park since 2009.
Luna Park Owners Reflect on Cyclone’s Enduring Appeal
“Many people in the United States have life dream lists,” Paula Zamperla observed.
“And numerous visitors come here with their lists and tell us, ‘I must ride the Cyclone because it’s on my list,'” she added, emphasizing the iconic coaster’s bucket-list status.
For Alessandro Zamperla, the Cyclone’s thrill remains timeless.
“Every year, it becomes even better,” he said.
“It’s akin to a fine wine: it develops more character, evokes stronger emotions, and gains more energy from the people. Just contemplate the hundreds of thousands who have experienced it since 1927,” Alessandro concluded, reflecting on the Cyclone’s lasting legacy.
