Lorraine Kelly Opens Up About Menopause Health Struggle

TV personality Lorraine Kelly has recently shared her personal experience with menopause, describing it as a “struggle” that made her feel unlike herself. The ITV presenter revealed that she initially “couldn’t really understand what was happening” and sought guidance from her colleague and friend, Dr Hilary Jones. Speaking at the Ideal Home Show in London, Kelly, age 65, highlighted the importance of open conversations about menopause and women’s health.

Navigating Menopause Symptoms

During a discussion at the Ideal Home Show, Lorraine Kelly recounted her journey with menopause. “We wanted to invite prominent women to openly discuss menopause. This was because I was experiencing it personally, and I found it quite challenging,” she explained.

“I was feeling low and not my usual self, and I couldn’t decipher what was occurring. Eventually, due to a lack of guests, Dr Hilary and I switched roles, and he interviewed me about my experience,” Kelly added, emphasizing the initial hesitation to discuss such personal health matters publicly.

Breaking the Silence Around Women’s Health

Kelly reflected on the changing attitudes towards menopause, stating, “At that time, I believe many women were ready to openly discuss this topic. Now, it seems everyone is talking about it. It’s essential to talk freely about these things and eliminate embarrassment.”

She also addressed her initial concerns about raising menopause as a workplace issue, fearing potential discrimination or ageism. “I was somewhat apprehensive about bringing it up initially as a potential issue related to workplace discrimination or ageism. I think attitudes have improved since then. Normalizing these conversations is beneficial, and the audience response was overwhelming and incredibly reassuring,” Kelly noted.

HRT as a Treatment Option

On her ITV program, Lorraine, Kelly previously disclosed how using a hormone replacement therapy “patch” had been transformative for her. “Certain patches genuinely work. I currently use an HRT patch and it has revolutionized my life. So, some treatments are indeed effective,” she shared.

In another episode, she reiterated the positive impact of HRT, adding, “It didn’t take long to make a difference. I genuinely felt like I was losing my grip. I felt detached, joyless, and nothing felt right. That’s when I sought help. I understand HRT isn’t for everyone, but it’s important not to dismiss it outright.”

Understanding Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

According to the NHS, “Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a treatment aimed at alleviating menopause symptoms. It replenishes hormones that decline as women approach menopause.”
