A powerful earthquake of magnitude 8.2 struck Myanmar, prompting a red alert from the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The major seismic event on Friday was followed by a significant aftershock, registering magnitude 6.4, approximately 12 minutes later in the same region. The USGS estimates a high probability – exceeding 30% – of fatalities ranging from 1,000 to 100,000 due to this devastating quake.

USGS Issues Red Alert

The earthquake has been assigned a level IX intensity rating by the USGS, indicating violent shaking and widespread damage. According to the agency’s website, a “red alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses” is in effect. This signifies a high likelihood of substantial casualties and extensive destruction, with the potential for a widespread disaster. The USGS further noted that previous red alerts have typically necessitated national or international emergency response efforts.

Myanmar Earthquake Casualties Mount

Tragically, initial reports from Myanmar confirm a rising death toll. As of Friday afternoon, at least 144 deaths have been confirmed, with over 730 people reported injured. Early accounts indicate that at least three individuals perished in Myanmar due to the partial collapse of a mosque.

“Enormous Damage” Reported in Mandalay

A rescue team member based in Mandalay, Myanmar, described the extent of the damage as “enormous.” Speaking to news sources as rescue operations commenced, the rescuer conveyed the grim situation, stating, “The number of deaths is also quite high… The precise number of casualties remains unknown at this time, but it is believed to be at least in the hundreds,” highlighting the ongoing and challenging nature of the rescue efforts and the anticipated rise in confirmed casualties.

Hospitals Under Strain

Medical facilities in affected areas are reportedly under significant pressure. Dr. Yan Naing of Mandalay Hospital revealed that the hospital had already received over 200 patients and confirmed 19 fatalities. Dr. Naing also indicated a critical lack of sufficient medical staff and treatment space to cope with the influx of casualties.

Thailand Impact: Fatalities in Bangkok

The repercussions of the Myanmar earthquake extended beyond its borders, reaching neighboring Thailand. Thai Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed that at least three deaths occurred in Bangkok. These fatalities resulted from the collapse of an under-construction high-rise building, underscoring the widespread impact of the seismic event.
