Anthony Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn are carefully evaluating potential opponents for his upcoming boxing fight, with several high-profile names in contention. The 35-year-old former champion has not competed since his defeat to Daniel Dubois for the IBF heavyweight title in September 2024. In that Wembley bout, Joshua was knocked down multiple times before the referee stopped the contest, prompting some to suggest he should retire. Fury Fight Unlikely as Focus Shifts to Alternatives
A long-desired showdown with Tyson Fury has consistently eluded Joshua, and Fury’s recent announcement of retirement following his defeats to Oleksandr Usyk further diminishes the possibility. Hearn initially indicated that Fury would be their primary target should he reverse his retirement decision. However, acknowledging the unlikelihood of this scenario, the promoter is actively exploring alternative opponents.
“Ideally, Tyson Fury would decide to return to the ring and accept a fight with AJ,” Hearn stated in an interview with The Sun. “That call would be incredible, but if it doesn’t happen, we need to identify another challenger. Joshua must be fully prepared physically, as this is arguably the most crucial decision in this latter phase of his career.”
Dubois Rematch and Other Potential Rivals
Fury’s retirement makes a rematch with Dubois a plausible option. However, Dubois, the current IBF champion, is reportedly prioritizing a rematch with Usyk, who defeated him in 2023. This creates further complexity in securing Dubois for Joshua’s next fight.
Kabayel, Parker, and Wilder Considered
Should bouts with Fury and Dubois prove unattainable, Joshua’s options include Agit Kabayel, Joseph Parker, and Deontay Wilder. Kabayel currently holds the WBC interim belt, while Parker possesses the WBO title. A contest against Wilder, a former rival, could be an appealing prospect for Joshua. However, Wilder has recently confirmed a June fight with Tyrell Herndon, seemingly ruling him out as an immediate opponent.
