Jenny McCarthy: Plant-Based Diet ‘Almost Killed Me,’ Led to Carnivore Lifestyle

Actress and television personality Jenny McCarthy has revealed that her attempt at veganism had detrimental effects on her health, leading her to adopt a “full carnivore” diet. McCarthy stated that the plant-based regimen nearly caused severe health issues, prompting her to drastically change her eating habits.

Vegan Diet Proved Unsuitable for McCarthy’s Health

During a recent episode of the “Heal Squad” podcast, McCarthy, 52, recounted her negative experience with veganism. “I ventured into veganism, and it almost resulted in my death,” she confessed. “I became incredibly unwell. I was constantly exhausted and weak. My health was in a disastrous state.”

McCarthy elaborated that the vegan diet was not compatible with her specific health conditions. She explained that adhering to a plant-based approach made it exceedingly challenging to consume sufficient calories due to pre-existing dietary limitations. McCarthy suffers from celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that impairs gluten digestion. She also disclosed a “dairy issue” and a soy allergy.

Dietary Restrictions Complicated Vegan Approach

“I have limitations with carbohydrates, and unfortunately, almost everything contains carbs,” she noted. “Compounding the issue, I am also allergic to soy, which is prevalent in numerous food items.”

Transition to Carnivore Diet as a ‘Last Resort’

Faced with declining health, McCarthy felt compelled to make a significant dietary shift. “I experimented with a low histamine diet, among many others,” she shared. “Ultimately, my functional medicine physician advised me last year that it was ‘time for you to transition to a full carnivore diet.’”

McCarthy clarified that a full carnivore diet consists exclusively of meat, poultry, eggs, and seafood.

Initial Hesitations and Positive Outcomes

“My initial reaction was reluctance,” she admitted. “Being from Chicago, I can manage meat-heavy meals, but the concept felt low vibrational and heavy for me. I was more inclined towards lighter options like salmon.”

Despite her reservations, McCarthy decided to try the carnivore diet as a “last resort.” “However, I resolved to try it; it seemed like my final dietary option. It has been remarkably effective for me – and I must emphasize, for my individual needs.”

Improved Digestion and Energy Levels

McCarthy highlighted the positive impact on her digestive health, a long-standing concern. “The diet has transformed my energy levels and digestion. I have struggled with constipation since childhood… requiring interventions from a young age,” she revealed. “Since adopting the carnivore approach, I experience regular bowel movements daily without needing laxatives.”

Dietary Choice is Personal

McCarthy’s dietary changes coincide with her recovery from Candida, a fungal infection, Hashimoto’s Disease, a chronic autoimmune condition affecting the thyroid, and leaky gut syndrome.

While acknowledging the positive benefits she has experienced, McCarthy cautioned listeners against universally adopting her carnivore diet. “Vegan diets can be beneficial and promote healing for some, but not for everyone,” she stated. “It depends on individual beliefs, intuition and importantly, your body’s specific needs as indicated by blood tests and physiological responses. Your body provides crucial feedback.”
