Global Survey Ranks Top Cities for Public Transportation

For many individuals, public transportation is a crucial element of daily life, often dictating the rhythm of our day. Whether navigating by bus or underground, we’ve all encountered how disruptions or delays can impact schedules, or how a crowded train journey can swiftly affect one’s disposition. A recent global survey has identified the leading cities worldwide for public transit, highlighting Hong Kong as number one, with London also securing a high position in the rankings.

Hong Kong’s Public Transport System Crowned Best Globally

TimeOut recently unveiled the results of a global study evaluating urban mobility, ranking cities based on the quality of their transportation systems. The survey encompassed over 50 nations and gathered insights from more than 18,500 transport users, who rated their city’s systems as either “good” or “amazing.” Hong Kong secured the top spot, with an impressive 98% of residents expressing contentment with the territory’s public transport network.

Key Features of Hong Kong’s Transit System

  • MTR (Mass Transit Railway): A comprehensive network spanning 10 lines, connecting Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories, extending to the mainland China border.
  • Air-Conditioned Buses and Minibuses: Providing comfortable and extensive surface transport options.
  • Iconic Double-Decker Trams: A distinctive and efficient mode of transport, adding to the city’s charm and practicality.

Hong Kong prides itself on possessing one of the most efficient and safest public transportation systems in the world. It includes 98 railway stations alongside an extensive network of buses, minibuses, trams, ferries, and water taxis. The MTR boasts an exceptional 99.9% on-time performance rate, with trains operating at two-minute intervals during peak hours.

London’s Transport Network Recognized Among World’s Best

London, home to the world’s oldest underground network, was ranked sixth globally and first in Europe in the TimeOut survey. Receiving an 86% approval rating, London’s extensive network and diverse modes of transportation were acknowledged. Vienna followed closely with an 84% satisfaction score.

London’s Expansive Transport Options

Despite its high ranking, London has also been designated the most expensive transport system globally due to recent fare increases. TimeOut noted the city’s comprehensive transport offerings:

  • The Tube (Underground): Spanning 402 kilometers, enhanced three years ago by the addition of the modern, high-speed Elizabeth Line.
  • The Overground: Recently rebranded to be more tourist-friendly, expanding connectivity across the city.
  • Lime Bikes: A popular cycle-sharing scheme with an estimated 30,000 bikes available throughout the city.
  • Bus Routes: An extensive network of 675 routes, with 97 operating throughout the night, ensuring 24-hour connectivity.

For visitors staying in London long-term, utilizing a UK railcard with an Oyster card offers a cost-saving measure, providing a one-third discount on off-peak travel.
