Carpenter, confident in his knowledge of the correct answer, orchestrated a playful deception for both the studio audience and host Regis Philbin. Speaking with his father via the speakerphone connection, he stated with amusement, “I don’t really need your help. I just wanted to let you know that I’m gonna win the million dollars.”
The live audience reacted with initial shock, which quickly turned to laughter and enthusiastic applause as the unexpected nature of Carpenter’s announcement became clear. He then confidently provided the correct answer, Richard Nixon, securing the million-dollar prize.
Show’s Legacy and International Versions
The original US iteration of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire broadcast from 1999 until 2019 before its cancellation. However, the popular quiz was revived by ABC the following year, with Jimmy Kimmel assuming hosting duties and introducing a format featuring celebrity participants.
The original UK version of the program continues to be broadcast, currently hosted by former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson. To date, six contestants on the UK show have successfully won the £1 million jackpot, with Judith Keppel being the first to achieve this milestone in 2000.
