SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered Arrives on PC via Steam

Despite an initially lukewarm reception upon its 2000 PlayStation debut in the West, SaGa Frontier 2 has aged gracefully, now available in a new remastered edition for PC. Unlike the prevailing trend towards 3D graphics at the time, this RPG, much like its predecessor, embraced exquisitely detailed hand-drawn backgrounds and charming sprite animations. This artistic choice, though admittedly subjective, has allowed its visual style to endure remarkably well, particularly when juxtaposed with contemporaries such as Final Fantasy 7.

Play SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered on PC Today

Previously, enjoying SaGa Frontier 2 on modern systems necessitated emulation. However, this is no longer the case. Following an announcement at today’s Nintendo Direct, a remaster of the classic JRPG has launched on Steam. This release follows the 2021 PC launch of the original SaGa Frontier, expanding the availability of these beloved titles to a wider audience.

Enhanced Features and New Content in the Remaster

This remastered version of SaGa Frontier 2 boasts a suite of enhancements, including sharper visuals, a refreshed user interface, and a new game plus mode. Players can also utilize a fast-forward combat option to accelerate gameplay. Beyond technical improvements, significant additions to the content are also present.

Key Additions in SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered:

  • New Narrative Events and Playable Characters: Expanding the game’s storyline and roster, offering fresh experiences for returning players.
  • Augmented Boss Battles: Tackle a selection of newly added, formidable bosses for increased challenge.
  • Parameter Inheritance System: A novel feature enabling the transfer of character statistics within your party, adding strategic depth to character progression.
  • Expedition Quests: Send out “diggers” on expeditions to procure rewards, introducing a new layer of gameplay.

SaGa Series: A Legacy of Challenging RPGs

The SaGa series, initiated in 1989, emerged as a more demanding alternative to the Final Fantasy formula. The most recent entry, SaGa: Emerald Beyond, was released last year. While the SaGa franchise may possess a comparatively smaller Western fanbase than other Square Enix properties—with titles like Emerald Beyond potentially receiving less widespread attention among PC gamers—the resurgence of classic PlayStation JRPGs on PC platforms remains a welcome development.

Classic Revivals: Raidou Remastered Also Announced

Today’s announcements extend beyond SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered. Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army, a cult classic action-oriented Shin Megami Tensei spin-off originally from 2006, is also slated to arrive on PC for the first time in June. This signifies a continued trend of revisiting and revitalizing classic titles for modern audiences.
