Sea Turtles Rehabilitated in Missouri Released into Atlantic Ocean Off Florida Coast
Nineteen sea turtles, nursed back to health in Missouri after experiencing cold-water temperatures in New England, were returned to their natural habitat in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida, on Wednesday afternoon. This successful release highlights the ongoing efforts to conserve these vulnerable marine animals.
Sunny Skies Welcome Released Turtles
Under sunny skies and a temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit, the turtles entered the ocean at Little Talbot Island State Park, near Jacksonville, according to officials from the rehabilitation facility. Their extensive journey was facilitated by the Johnny Morris Sea Turtle Center, located in Springfield, Missouri, and the Turtles Fly Too, a nonprofit organization specializing in animal transport.
Cross-Country Journey for Recovery
In December, twenty loggerhead and Kemp’s ridley turtles were transported by air from the New England Aquarium in Boston to the Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium in Springfield, Missouri. Mike Daniel, the director of animal care, provided details about the turtles’ relocation for treatment.
13 Weeks of Intensive Care
Tragically, one turtle, which was critically ill upon arrival, did not survive. However, the remaining nineteen turtles received 13 weeks of dedicated treatment for cold stunning. This condition occurs when rapid drops in water temperature lead to health issues in sea turtles, including pneumonia, hypothermia, and dehydration. Veterinarians at the center provided continuous, around-the-clock care to aid their recovery.
Combating Cold Stunning on the Atlantic Coast
Over recent months, hundreds of sea turtles along the United States’ Atlantic Coast have been affected by cold stunning. Florida often serves as a primary destination for the rehabilitation of these cold-stunned turtles due to its warmer climate and established rescue infrastructure.
Missouri Center’s Growing Impact on Sea Turtle Rescue
The Missouri-based turtle center, which commenced operations in 2020, has now successfully rehabilitated approximately 55 sea turtles, demonstrating its increasing role in marine animal conservation efforts.
Satellite Tracking for Conservation
Prior to their release, the turtles were fitted with advanced satellite tracking devices. These devices will enable conservation scientists to closely monitor the turtles’ movements and gather valuable data for ongoing research and conservation initiatives aimed at protecting these magnificent creatures.
