Auroras on ice giant revealed: Space photo of the day

In a groundbreaking observation for space exploration and astronomy, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has successfully detected vibrant auroral emissions on Neptune, marking the first time these energetic displays have been clearly imaged on the distant ice giant.

Significance of Neptune Aurorae Detection

Capturing auroral activity on this frigid world has been a long-sought goal. While similar phenomena, driven by energetic particles from the sun, have been observed in the atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus, imaging them on Neptune presented a unique challenge.

Overcoming Previous Observation Limitations

Prior to the James Webb Space Telescope’s advanced capabilities, evidence of Neptune’s aurorae remained elusive. NASA’s Voyager 2 probe, during its 1989 flyby, and the Hubble Space Telescope lacked the necessary sensitivity to definitively capture the faint auroral glow.

“It turns out that directly imaging Neptune’s auroral emissions required Webb’s exceptional near-infrared sensitivity,” stated Henrik Melin, a researcher at Northumbria University. His findings, stemming from research conducted at the University of Leicester, have been published in the journal Nature. “Witnessing the auroras, and particularly the exquisite detail and clarity of their signature, was truly astonishing.”

In the JWST images, the aurorae appear as pale blue or cyan regions contrasted against the deeper blue hue of the planet.

Neptune’s Aurorae Compared to Earth’s Polar Lights

The genesis of Neptune’s auroral glow is fundamentally similar to Earth’s Northern and Southern Lights. It arises from the interaction of solar particles with the planet’s atmosphere. However, unlike Earth’s aurorae, which are concentrated around the poles, Neptune’s auroral activity is situated at mid-latitudes – roughly corresponding to Earth’s South America.

Influence of Neptune’s Magnetic Field

This unusual location is attributed to Neptune’s significantly tilted magnetic field, offset by 47 degrees from its rotational axis. Auroral phenomena manifest where a planet’s magnetic field lines converge into its atmosphere. Consequently, Neptune’s aurorae are observed far from its rotational poles.

Insights from Neptune’s Auroral Emissions

The detection of Neptune’s aurorae provides planetary scientists with a valuable tool to enhance their understanding of how solar particles interact with the atmospheres of ice giant planets, opening a new avenue of research in this area.

Data acquired by the Webb Space Telescope also facilitated measurements of the temperature in Neptune’s upper atmosphere, the first such readings since the Voyager 2 flyby. These findings may shed light on why Neptune’s aurorae have remained undetected until now.

“I was astonished – Neptune’s upper atmosphere has undergone a cooling of several hundred degrees,” Melin mentioned in a statement from the Space Telescope Science Institute. “Indeed, the temperature recorded in 2023 was barely half of what Voyager 2 measured in 1989.”
