Subsequently, allegations surfaced that UConn’s sports information director, Bobby Mullen, reportedly threatened the reporter who recorded the video, Queen City News’ Joey Ellis, with professional repercussions. Hurley’s Apologetic Tone and Defense of Officials
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Hurley stated, “I wish I didn’t” become excessive in his reaction, while still maintaining a hint of the characteristic intensity for which the UConn head coach is recognized.
“Those were three excellent officials in that game,” Hurley clarified, as reported by the Hartford Courant. “Therefore, despite my heated comments in the immediate aftermath, it occurred in an area of the arena that, in almost every college game I’ve coached, is generally considered off-limits to the media. Beyond the tunnel, near the locker rooms, in the hallway designated for coaches—that space is for the competitors, the participants. It isn’t intended for camera phones. In fairness, those were very competent referees, and Florida rightfully earned their victory.”
“If I don’t lose my composure at the conclusion there, after that impressive three-year stretch concluded in such agonizing fashion… If I don’t exhibit that emotional outburst, the primary discussion would likely revolve around the successful run we’ve had, and the exceptional caliber of players.”
Mullen’s Apology and Ellis’s Response
Mullen has since issued an apology to Joey Ellis of Queen City News this week for his conduct.
Ellis appeared content to move past the controversy.
Hurley Accepts Responsibility
Hurley reiterated Mullen’s expressed regret concerning his involvement, while ultimately assuming full responsibility for the entirety of the situation.

“Bobby is regretful, mirroring my own regret for certain moments,” Hurley acknowledged. “Evidently, I am entirely at fault for Bobby being drawn into this. I initiated the entire sequence of events and I feel terrible about it. He could have managed the situation with the media representative and the recording device [differently]; he could have simply disregarded it. More appropriate training for scenarios like this should have been in place, particularly as we’ve encountered similar situations throughout the year.”
“However, Bobby is incredibly loyal. We all demonstrate that level of loyalty within our program, and occasionally, our passion may lead us to exceed boundaries. But Bobby is an exceptional individual.”
UConn aimed to secure its third consecutive national championship this season in March Madness.
