Costa Rican Official Updates on Miller Case, Cites Autopsy Delays Due to Homicide Surge
Following statements from the resort where the Gardner family was lodging, Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia, a representative for Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency (JIA), has verified that the autopsy findings for Miller will be postponed for several months. This analysis delay is attributed to a significant increase in crime and a surge in homicides within the region, impacting the processing time for forensic investigations.
Autopsy Results Delayed Due to Crime Surge
“We are experiencing a surge in homicides as rival drug cartels fiercely compete for control of territory,” Alvarado Garcia stated to media outlets, emphasizing that “each of these cases necessitates a post-mortem examination.” This influx of cases has created a considerable backlog within the JIA’s forensic department.
Timeline for Miller’s Autopsy Analysis
He further clarified, “I can confirm that a post-mortem has been conducted on Miller. However, the comprehensive analysis and conclusive results, as with all such investigations, will require a minimum of two to three months. This timeframe is due to a substantial backlog of cases caused by the persistent wave of killings. This is the current situation.”
No Indication of Drugs or Alcohol in Death
Alvarado Garcia did, however, affirm that there was no indication suggesting Miller’s death was connected to the use of recreational drugs or alcohol consumption. This statement offers some clarity amidst speculation surrounding the circumstances of Miller’s passing.
Body Repatriation Awaits Embassy Processing
Despite the anticipated delay in receiving the autopsy results, the official clarified that, as “all necessary samples” were obtained during Miller’s post-mortem examination, the repatriation of his remains to the United States is authorized. He noted, however, that the Gardner family is currently awaiting the completion of their request processing by the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica.
